I'am wiring a 2hp 220 motor for the fan on my home built paint booth. I installed 10-3 wire. it has a red, black, white, and copper wire.I put red and black to hot on the braker, white to ground and not real sure what to do with copper.fan seems to run fine as I tied wire together where switch should be. How do I wire the switch? It looks like a regular house light switch but says 240 volts on it. Do I just put the reds on one side and blacks on the other and tie the whites together or what?

The copper is for ground. The white is for neutral and is used if you need 120V. You need to use a double pole disconnect switch connected to the red and black. Switching one leg, either black or white with a single pole switch will work to turn the fan on and off.

Always use a double pole switch for a 220 circuit. Break both hot legs for 220 devices. Use the bare copper wire for grounding.
