220 to 110 transformer ??????

My shop may not have power for a 9 amp 110 drill press, but I have 220 receptacle within 10 feet. Question...If I plug in a 220 to 110 transformer in the receptacle and 110 to that will that have the hp.to run it? my 110 is too far away 80' of extension cord.:dunno:

Is your drill press motor dual voltage? If so, switch it to 240V and run it without a transformer.

That's actively dangerous!

It's worth opening the electrical box to see if the wiring actually has a neutral conductor. If so, replace the outlet with preferred receptacle type, or a new outlet.

If this is the only outlet on the wiring run, you can just switch it at the panel.

Why would he need that? If he takes his shoes off he has a perfectly fine ground.

OP - djb2 is on the right track! We did this at my folks house in highschool. There was a range plug in the finished basement, and we converted it to a 20amp dedicated 120v circuit instead of a 30amp 240v circuit. I should say, I think its a range and I think it was 10ga, I really don't know, my dad did it while I was at school one day. I just know it wound up with a 20amp breaker and it def had a neutral when we were done.

So:
- Open box and check out wiring
- Put a new receptacle in the box, using the existing wiring, hopefully which has a neutral
- If it doesn't have a neutral, I think its allowable (someone will correct me I'm sure!) to mark the second hot as a neutral, and then obv move it over in the breaker panel
- Change the breaker out, and perhaps remark/move the second hot to act as a neutral, if this is allowed, which I'm sure someone will chime in about.
- Profit!

This is going to be table saw and drill press thing. My tablesaw is and will stay 220, I am going to have my shop rewired by a pro and I will have no more worries. This 220 to 110 is temp..maybe 6 months until shop is sound with electrical. I have to get PG&E to bring more power to the house. Buy the transformer is something that being new and purchased from an electrical supply online might suffice. My drill press is 9 amps but also is 17". I just want to keep it. Its one of those dinosaurs, like my 1945 craftsman tablesaw. All castiron

Ranges often have 120/240. The neutral is wired to provide 120 for lights, timers, etc.

It is worth a shot to see if a neutral has been wired to your 240 socket but most likely not there.

I would not waste money on a "temporary" step down transformer, as you most likely will never have a use again. Rather spend that money on a decent extension cord, at least 12 gauge, to temporarily run your drill press.

Dont waste your money on a transformer! Just rewire the 240v branch circuit to a 120v circuit!

And then u wont have to bother testing for voltage drop over 170' of wire as u mentioned in your other thread!!

Its not like the utility company gives you a neutral line...Your neutral wire is tied to the ground in your breaker panel. Go pop off your breaker panel cover, you will find 2 live lines come in from the utility company, a ground buss bar goes to a copper rod in the earth, and the neutral bar is tied to the ground. So in theory this is not dangerous, this is the way home were wired for years.

If you are at all confused, or unsure stop and call a professional to assist you, no one here wants you to get hurt.

1. Any transformer will be expensive.

2. You can get a 10 AWG extension cord.

3. What trips? The motor's overload protector, the breaker in the box, or what?

4. That 240 volt circuit is probably no different (wire size) than what you have and unless you either modify the drill press for 240 volts or you are lucky and it is 10 AWG, using it as a 120 volt source would not help.

Huh? A grounded conductor(neutral), an equipment ground(egc), and a grounding electrode(ground rod, ufer) are all sifferent things an serve different purposes! Under normal conditions, current should NEVER be flowing on an EGC or grounding electrode! If u have current flowing on a ground wire, then theres a potential for shock! This can energize anything thats metal and bonded to the ground wire. This is just the reason why neutral and ground are bonded together!

The only time u may see current flowing on an electrode or metal water line is when the neutral feeding a house develops a bad connection somewhere between the transformer and main service panel of the house. This is rare and usually what hapens in that situation is one side of the MWBC feeding the house will see voltage above 120v and the other side will see voltage below 120v!
