220 wiring in my garage

Ive read many posts about 220 and think I've got it. So my question is i have one receptacle wired for my welder now I want to continue from that one around the wall and add a second one for convenience so my welder can be used other places the shop. My new compressor is 220 can i go from the second receptacle and add a switch for my compressor to shut it off and wire my compressor or do I need to run a separate wire from my breaker box to the switch and compressor because there may be a time when the welder and compressor are running at the same time. Thanks in advance.

no

two pieces of gear two separate circuits, to be correct. Those receptacles can be switched locally, as long as your switch is correctly wired, but likely not needed as most gear has it's own on/off switch

The switch I was referring to would be past the receptacles and it would just be there to shut off the air compressor with is 5hp 2stage 60 gallon 230v 22.0 amps. And I'm using 50 amp breakers because of my welder a Hobart handler 180 and a miller buzz box. Or should I run a separate circuit for the air compressor and use 30 amp breakers for it? And 10/2 wire.

To do it correctly, you would run a separate circuit, and a 30 amp breaker to the compressor.

I personally use a magnetic starter with a on/off switch for my compressor, the rest of it is hardwired to the breaker panel. You will want to avoid using a plug on the air compressor if you do not need it to be mobile.

Jmilch,thanks for your input that is exactly what I was doing. I was just tossing other ideas around to see if they would work.

you may find a more viable alternative is just making and extention cord for the welder. That's what I did so I can hit other side of shop or wheel it outside if i've got a trailer or something in the driveway to weld on.

U should use separate circuits. Im not even sure u could size a circuit for simultaneous use of a compressor and welder. Not to mention doing it to code!

The compressor needs to be hardwired(cant use receptacle). And 10/2 wire is too small by code it needs to be 8/2 because wire is sized @ 125 % of NEC FLC, which is 28a. Or if u use THHN in conduit then u can use #10... A 30a breaker would probably work but u may need to go higher due to in rush current.
