My wife wants to buy me a heater for Christmas.

I want one I can ceiling mount and hard wire. And I want to mount a thermostat on the wall to control it. I have 220v available in sub-panel in the garage already.

I'm wondering where to buy such a thing in Canada, specifically in Winnipeg MB.

Any thoughts appreciated. Budget is only $200-300.

Buy a 220v construction heater, remove dial thermostat in the back, wire a new thermostat in(will need to be 120v usually) then hard wire heater. That's what I did and it works well

I think construction heaters as a permanent source of heat might be a bad move wouldn't it? The coils get a lot hotter than the permanent types.

I would expect them to cost more to run too.

Right on the edge of your budget but they usually do go on sale in the fall and spring ... Take a picture in to a local electrical supply house as they can source some intersting construction heaters. A good 5000W contstruction heater will cost much much less if you don't mind loosing the ceiling mount.

BTW... insulation is your freind if you have not done it yet. By far the biggest single improvement to working in the garage winter or summer.

I know you want ceiling mounted, but have you considered baseboard heaters?

They are cheap, effective, and don't make a sound.

I once owned a house with BB heat. It was the noisiest heat I've ever seen. They switched on and did all kinds of banging and popping as they warmed up, then as soon as they switched off, there goes the banging and popping again. You about could not sleep or watch TV with the heaters on.

Really? Are you think of radiators instead of baseboard?

I lived in 2 different houses with BB heat, and currently have BB heaters in my garage as a backup heat source and have never noticed what you describe.

Yes, there is a little bit of popping and pinging but you'd never notice it over regular TV volume and I'd never describe it as "banging". My experience has been that you can hear a little noise but only if the room is dead silent.

I agree; we have installed baseboard heaters in many buildings (usually in entranceways, foyers, etc. but some in residential suites as well) and I've never heard of a noise complaint....virtually silent with no moving parts.

I just had one picked up for me at Princess Auto(havent seen it yet). It resembled a Dayton G73 from the flyer picture. I believe it may be a Honeywell brand, around 4800watts. Part number is 8436834 and I think its a new item since it is not in the catalogue or online. Price is a cool $149.99 and if it craps out, I'll return it!

Coincidently the Dayton 3UG73 heater is on sale right now at Acklands Grainger for $311.04 in their most recent flyer. Regular price of $580ish, not a bad bargain either if you ask me.

I decided to save some money and roll the dice quality wise. Only time will tell if I made a good choice.

Read carefully this is a great issue.http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/heater-blamed-in-fire-family-sues-for-1m-179621161.html

Google the heater mfg and it is not off shore.

Insulation will be key!

As they saw in Lindenwoods, fire is always a potential with construction heaters, but not common.

My friend had a 220V construction heater that almost caught on fire, but went on the fritz while the garage was occupied.

Go Winnipeg!!!

Some great suggestions here, but there is really one that needs to be HIGHLY encouraged is the "Farenheat" from Fleet Farm (Fargo, ND). I drove from the 'peg and picked one up and its had a full year of duty cycle (150 sq feet workshop). Absolutely no issues. The second one was installed recently, but it hasn't had to work too hard (400 sq ft garage). Nice even heat, quick cycle (60 seconds - 2 minutes approx).

I am running two of them in my "Hockey Stick Garage" (220V). Can't say enough about them, built-in safe guards (built-in thermostat), minimal maintenance, easy installation (15 minutes), great construction and VERY good value ($250 or less).

Also, no duty (made in USA), but double check with Canadian Border Services (1-800 number). Heck, make an overnight / weekend shopping trip out of it! Lots of great garage ideas.

I can't say enough good things about the Fahrenheat FUH54 ceiling mounted heater. I've had mine for over a year now and it works fantastic in my insulated 600sqft garage here in Colorado.

This heater is made by Marley, the same company that manfactures the Dayton 3UG73. This is the same high quality Dayton heater without the Dayton sticker. The only difference is the Fahrenheat costs about half of what the Dayton labeled heater price.

One more thing. The built in thermostat ( low-med-high) works very well. I have figured out which level equates to temps. I can regulate ot within 3 degrees Celsius. No need for a wall mount thermostat.

I picked up an FUH54. With no thermo. Will hardwire and wall mount a thermostat.

As for construction heaters as permanent heat, I've never felt it was a good idea. The elements get too hot.

Seems to be a few GJ winnipeggers here?

I assume you got the Farenheat? Did you head to FleetFarm (Fargo), as I couldn't find anyone locally who sold them. And yes, there are a few Winnipeger's here. PS - start with the built-in thermostat for awhile. That's all I use and it's been easy to regulate temps.

I got it through a friend of a friend who has an electrical wholesale place in town here. The version I got doesn't have a thermostat, it's supplied without it.

your gut instinct is correct. In fact your insurance wouldn't have to pay out if your burned your place down heating with construction heaters because they are not listed to be used as permanent heat

Thus why you may want to consider suing the manufacturer of the construction heater if you do burn your place down.

If it is indeed a FUH54 it does have a built in thermostat with the dial beneath the louvers, center front. I have the same heater and with the dial set 1 mark from the fully counterclockwise spot, it keeps my 26X28 w/10' ceiling shop at 55 degrees. It cycles once or twice an hour as needed to keep this temperature. There is an optional wall mount thermostat but I have not seen the need for it.

Mine does not have a built in thermostat. FUH54 is available with or without. (Wall mounted means I won't have to get the stepladder out everytime I want to adjust the temp).

Anyhow, I'll post a thread during the install for those who want to see. By then I'll have obtained a suitable thermostat to control it.

Pretty sure you could consider it all you like, but I don't think you'd have a leg to stand on.

I was being sarcastic and referring to what the family in Lindenwoods (whose home burned down) are doing.

Oh sorry! I get it now. Yeah, I think they are on a loser there. Didn't it say somewhere they had been using it for 7 years or something?

As for pics, I guess I could post a couple. Will install over xmas I'd think. Could start an install thread if anyone is interested.

So, do you not have the adjustable dial that goes from low to high, on the lower front of the heater?

Hmmmm..... what brand is it? As posted earlier, I have two Farenheat's and they both have the dial below the louvers. Is this an "Oulette" brand perhaps? What does the box say?

My apologies, the one I bought was a RUH5T. Not a RUH54, not sure where I got that. I have finally unpacked and attached some photos, as promised some weeks ago. Should get this up over the Christmas break.
