220V extension cord stranded wire

I know the 220V extension cord has been discussed many times before, but I'm having a hard time sourcing 6/3 or 6/2 stranded wire to complete this. I can obviously find 6/2 solid wire but I cannot find the stranded version. All of the range cords are 6/3 stranded so I know it exists. I just can't find it. Anyone know of a good place to find this? All of the home improvement stores I've visited only carry the solid wire versions. Thanks for the help.

check on ebay. there are usually a few places selling 6/3 SO cable, not cheap though from what I have seen. how much do you need? I have been toying with picking up a spool as I get inquiries for it from time to time.

Try a wholesale electrical distributer, in San Diego call Electrical Supplies Unlimited 858-695-2850. If they do not have it, they can get it.

This stuff is used to hookup mobile office trailers.

My welder has an 8 AWG 4 Cond SOOW cord from Home Depot.

The best price I found for SO cord is from Wesbell; he sells on ebay and his web site, best to call if you have any questions. They have 50' 6/3 so on ebay for 88.00 BIN

Another question is why the need for a 6 cord, just out of curiosity?

An electrical supply house is your best bet for 3-conductor SO cord. I'll bet an RV supply has cord too, it's probably all 4-conductor though, but it still might be cheaper than paying shipping from an Ebay auction. It'll come with molded-on cord ends too, which is almost always cheaper than buying your own cord ends and cord.

I would go with 2 different cords from an RV or Marine store.

I've bought a variety of wire and cable from McMaster Carr. They're not necessarily cheap, but they're a big plant and factory supplier, so what you get is good quality.

They typically ship out of Sacramento or Chicago. We have almost 9 percent sales tax in Washington, so the Sacramento shipping is often cheaper than the local sales tax.

mcmaster is AWFUL for this type of material. They charge $6.50something a foot for 6/3 SOOW. They are great for hardware and many other items, but are way too expensive for electrical items.

I stumbled across a box of #8 3 conductor strained cable years ago. it came with 100 feet in the box. Got it at a garage sale years ago for $10. Heavy as hell.
Sat in my Garage untill 2 years ago, when I took 50 feet and installed a 220 VAC outlet on one end (with a waterproof outdoor box) for my Mig Welder and 3 insulated spring clamps on the other.
This way I can go to anyones house (Friends-Family), and tap into their House Panel and do any welding tha may be needed there.
