120v 30 rv is 3 wire and designed to have additional panel in the trailer with 15 and 20 breakers for common cord connected equipment limited to 20 circuits.

Some cases like motor and welders may have breakers 250percent over wire ampacity it can't be over its short rating. This is real general but 14 at 30, 12 at 50 like a welder cord. The circuit could have 12 wire, has a machine with a 12 wire connected to it, wont overheat the circuit wire. Motor and AC circuits don't come with cords the electrician sizes this according to labels. Minimum wire/max breaker.

Yes, he would need to run a new circuit for a higher tool if he wired it to a minimum, no one really thinks this is a great idea but is useful for describing the principle.
There could be an argument for requring a full size wire, if it was a real problem the code would have fixed it.

Ok, that is what I wasn't getting. It seemed as though you were advocating for him to put a 30A breaker<-14ga wire->50A outlet in, rather that telling him that was the minimum.

Do some welders have short ratings below 50A, but are supplied with a 50A plug? Seems to be quite a stupid idea, as well as defeating plug/play compatability.

I get what you were referring to with short ratings, but most of the stuff I have can deal with the higher amounts if I chose to. Hence why it seemed like we were passing each other while discussing it.

I need to learn copy/paste with phone. I got pm saying I am wasting my time, I don't think so. As much as I would like to be clear enough to explain this it's frustrating but there is genuine interest and this often takes a while for some. It took me years before this is almost instinct or maybe more acurately a reflex.

The instructions for the 200 class mig are confusing to the layman on this, they are for electricians., They imply that the breaker is a 30 max, not so, it is with the minimum wire, once the wire is raised a size to 12 it can go to 50A. The machines with dvi have a different cord and cord cap internals, must have internal that allows their 14 cords to connect to 50A.

You can't just wire to higher circuits, this is part of the cord plug system, says a 30 has a 30 breaker and wire with exceptions for specific equipment such as welders.

So the electrician went in yesterday morning and put in some 6-30 plugs. Will just have to make sure the things I get in the future are compatible.

whatever you do, I recommend some type of service disconnect AT THE HOIST CONTROLS, either a switch or the plug, I have more than once have hoist controls stick on and had to disconnect the power to prevent damage/unsafe conditions

Nope, 50 amp RV is 240 4 wire. There are normally no 240 volt appliances in the RV, but it is still fed with 240.

Really? The RV dealership sold me a cooper 4 prong and the adapter for my RV, but when I tested the adapter, one leg was dead going to the RV and into my 30A extension cord. I am only installing the 50A plug for a future RV purchase. The dealer stated there is no US manufactured RV's that accept 220V and if I wired for 220V with a two pole 50A breaker I would destroy my RV. He stated I need to special order a one pole 50A breaker for the receptacle.

Your dealer is an idiot. :lol_hitti

Doh! Glad I found this thread and decided to search further. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=272579&page=2

So reading through most of the ******** arguing in the above link, I see that the RV is 120V but pulls off of each leg of the 240 at the panel in the RV. So, I plan to install the 14-50 on a 50A 2-pole breaker and get a 14-50 to L6-30 adapter for my small RV (haven't bought the 5th wheel yet) and a 14-50 to 6-50 adapter to use my welders (I use 3 different ones) off that same 240 outlet.

I have 5 240 drops in the shop right now so I don't want to add more on my 90 amp branch circuit coming off the house.
Thanks for the correction!
