220v single phase operating a 3ph motor?

Ok, so I've been looking at stepping up in the world of grinders and I'm no electrician..

I'd like to run a 2-3hp 3 phase on a VFD to control belt speed.

I'm currently setup for single phase power.

I keep reading threads of guys building "grinders in a box" and running 3ph motors and can't see all these guys being setup with 3 phase in their home garages..

So, how is it done?

Rotary converters are the usual way to supply 3-phase to remote locations. It's what I use. In fact, I'm getting ready to build at least one larger one. With a rotary converter, one can power as many 3-phase loads simultaneously as the converter can handle.

The newer method is a "digital conveter," which basically acts like a VFD but at a fixed frequency and for multiple motor loads. They're much more expensive though.

Rotary phase converter is the best way to go. Add a VFD after it for variable speed and u got a robust system.

With the Chi-com VFDs you get what u pay for. Ive seen many of those burn out in just a couple months!

And watch out for static converters. they arent as good because they single phase the motor once the capacitor kicks off and you loose 1/3 of the HP.

Nominal voltage in the US is 240v. 220v hasnt been around for decades!

Yes, if you are needing to vary the speed you will want to look into a variable frequncy drive that has a 1ph input and 3ph output, as you linked to. There are a wide array of 1ph VFDs out there in the 1-5hp range.

A rotary converter will not do you any good, as you'd still need the VFD to vary the speed of the motor.

And with a correctly sized VFD, you will still be able to get the full rated hp out of the motor.

There is a difference between a static converter and a VFD
Do not confuse them.
A static converter is a box with some properly sized capacitors and a little circuitry.
The capacitors help get it going on single phase and then the third led will self generate once running. Yes you loose about 1/3 of the rated HP.
A VFD takes AC turns it into DC and then electronically turns it back into AC 3ph.
They are about 95% efficient so you will keep almost all of the motors rating. You will run on single phase and be able to adjust the speed of the motor

When dealing with building a grinder as you propose you want to take into consideration the speed of the motor, and the drive ratio. Do your math so that the design of the drive keeps the motor near nominal speed for most use. Freq drives will control the motor from zero to 2x nominal speed but as you get further away from nominal speed then heat and insulation problems start to show up. So if you have a known belt speed you desire to operate at get a motor drive/gearing set-up for that and use the VFD to fine tune speed for outlaying speed jobs.

The reason i mention it is because 220v is 50hz in other countries and this board has international users.

And i dont think u read those links cause they both say 230v which is the nominal rating for motors and VFDs...

220-230-240, stick your tongue in them all and tell me which is which.....bet they all hurt like hell, IF you survive it.

Really, it just doesn't matter in the context of this thread. The OP asked a question and got the info he needed, your nit-picking didn't help anything.

One of those little Teco VFDs will work fine. Remember that even though it allows you to run the motor at varying speeds, you don't HAVE to do that - you can just run the grinder (or whatever) at its normal full speed like you normally would.
