225PSI Air Compressor

I have an opportunity to pick up an Industrial Air 15-gal 1.7HP compressor locally at a really good price.

Anybody have any experiences, good or bad, with 225psi compressors? Or really anything over the standard 125/150psi fare? I'm a little concerned about the higher PSI with regards to tank failures, line breakage, etc.

It would definitely be a step up from my 6 gal Alton. Just want to know if I'm buying trouble, or something worth picking up.

If it's a two stage compressor, it might be capable of 225psi, but you don't get something for nothing. The run time will have to go up to pack in that much air. I wouldn't trust any oilless for high pressure or high duty cycle operation, period.

Do you have a 30a 120v circuit to run this thing? Are we starting the new era of "Sears pressure" that will replace the old Sears Horsepower?

Not currently. But adding a circuit isn't difficult. Plenty of open breakers, and easy access to the attic to fish some new 10/2 or 12/2.

It would be a pretty low duty-cycle unit. I'm just a hobbyist. Right now the little ******* I have doesn't have the chooch to even start a file sander or run an impact. Its basically a glorified air gun and tire inflater that occasionally runs an air nailer or staple gun as needed.

1.7 hp is actually about 15 amps at 115 vac. 225 is max rated. I have always kept mine regulated to 160 which allows it to run easy and quiet. The pump and tank are built stronger to handle the higher pressure so don't worry about extra stress. My only worry would be that I have never seen a two stage compressor with such low power. I hope you are not talking about some Harbor freight ****.

My father has a larger IndustrialAir unit and it is a beast; works incredibly well too. unfortunately I have a 20x20' attached garage and he has a 40x60' shop. So his purposes and mine are vastly different
