230v air compressor recommendation needed

So at first I was after a 110v compressor. Then after reading online I see that you dont need a neutral for 230v, and you can use the white wire as a hot thus now making that circuit 230v.

With that said, I need some recommendations on what I can buy. Id prefer a big box store so I can pick it up. Its going to be used for impact, air ratchet, MAYBE a cut off or air hammer. Possibly a small HVLP or similar paint gun, oh and tires.

It wont be used a lot, just when I need to work on something.

With that said what do you gusy recommend? I checked CL and I havent seen anything in the past 1-2 months, just a few big boys that I dont need.

Thanks!

HF is rebranded.

There are only a few different mfgs.. You can see that when you look at the specs.

HD is probably the cheaper I think for a nice 80? gal... Powerful. And they take competitor coupons.

Air hammer uses the least air of any of the tools listed and cutoff uses the most. With a 60 gallon big box store unit you are buying a basically disposable unit that will run everything but the cutoff for normal use. I don't recommend them because they are typically very cheap Chinese made junk. But they will work. 3.2HP requires #10 Romex or #12 THHN (in conduit) by code. 2HP is the largest you can run on #12 Romex by code.

My 120V, 20gal Speedaire/CH does fine by me and was $350ish delivered from Zoro. The motor is a Marathon hecho en Mexico, and supposedly the pump is US-assembled. Never been a CH fan, but so far I can't complain. I don't use it a ton, I'm not doing side jobs, but it's run my 2135, air hammer, and even the whiz wheel. I can't say I've ever had to wait on it... not saying it'll move mountains, just food for thought.

Just to clarify, you understand unless you have 3 conductor (+ ground) wire, using the white as the 2nd hot makes the whole circuit 230v... so hopefully you have a circuit with one outlet (or you can abandon the rest), room to switch in a double-pole CB, and enough wire length to get to said double-pole slot.

It just bought the 60 gallon from lowes and I am
Very impressed. It runs my die grinder non stop for 10 minutes and can go longer. Also run a da sander and it does just as well. I was looking a 1000$ compressor but could not buy one due to my fairly infrequent use. For 500$ seems like a good deal.

Not sure I'm convinced you REALLY know what electrical needs you should have for 240v air compressor. You do know that it needs a DEDICATED 240v electrical circuit with appropriate HARD-WIRED connection based on HP of the motor powering the compressor ??

Do NOT wire the run before you decide on a compressor. 12 gauge wire likely will NOT be adequate.

GJ Sparky's will give you detailed answers on what wire is needed . . .
. . . . . AFTER . . . you decide on what 240v air compressor to get.

The OP already ran #12 Romex which means by code the OP cannot run anything more than a 2 HP compressor. Lots of people do run 3.2-3.7 HP off #12 Romex, but it doesn't meet code.
