24" Crescent Tool Co.

Hello!!
I just purchased a 24" adjustable wrench from Crescent Tool Co. Jamestown NY. It says it's Forged by Crestoloy.

I can't seem to find anything online that is remotely this size. It's huge, weighs quite a bit and looks old. In fact, there are actual initial "carved" in it LF.

I bought it at a thrift store and I'm curious as to the age and value of it. I tried registering with Papawswrench.com, but my 12 character password wasn't long enough and nothing else seemed to work.

So here I am.

And for the record, I'm female, not into tools, but have grown attached to my new rusty 'ol wrench! It looks as though it may have been painted yellow at one time.

Crescent wrenches began in 1907 or so and they started putting crestoloy on them in 1930 (Crestoloy was a trademark for alloy steel tools). The picture below is the closest I could find to match the description. The initials you have found are most likely owners marks put on the tool as identification. I am unsure of why it would be yellow as I have never seen one in person, it may be from rubbing against machinery or could just have had paint spilled on it by owner. As for price I have seen the 6-12 inch models of this description and age sell between $60-$125 so I can't see why you couldn't get between $150-200 depending on condition and if it works, If you have some picture it would be helpful towards deciphering this mystery. I believe there is someone on the forum who collects these but I can't remember a name, hope this helps

As to the value of your wrench, it always depends on what someone will pay, but anything above $50 would be very good. They are not uncommon, so supply (& demand!) is working against you, even in such a large wrench.

The password should not have been a problem. Yes, the registration can be tricky, but it keeps a lot of riff-raff out. I suffered a major loss of the original Tool Talk and have to be cautious.

I haven't seen a 24" Crescent adjustable, but they do exist. I have a 50s-60s Crescent display stand that has Crescent and Crestoloy wrenches, but the largest is 12'".

Where are these wrenches sold at those prices? I have plenty and haven't seen them that high at all. I have seen antique stores ASK those prices, but not sell them very often.

my quote was in U.S. dollars, I did research late at night and happened to come across a few ads on eBay of older crescent wrenches in 12" model for between 60-125, I understand that is just what they were ASKING and may not receive this amount but it is what I had to go on and accommodated for its size by seeing what newer wrenches of this size go for. I was more offering my input on era of the wrench to help OP find the answer themselves just gave a rough estimate with the info I had

As far as Papaw is concerned....is there a special hand shake or code I need to order to register. I'd still like to pursue that avenue as well.

While I would like to turn a profit on this bad boy, I'm growing attached to it each day.

If it's worth more that a 100 bucks...I'll let it go for sure. I can see why you "guys" like tools. Especially these really old ones.

I'm handling an estate sale with lots of old rusty tools....probably 60 years old. Are there some brand names I should be looking out for?
