24' Wide Enough

For those of you with 24' wide garages, do you find that is wide enough to allow for easily opening of the car doors when they are parked in the bays? I'm wondering about being cramped either against the exterior wall or because of the car parked in the second bay.

Finally in the serious planning stage for my new garage (barn, really).

Thanks for any insights.

Well, the site will permit just about any size, but the budget won't lol.

I am currently looking at a 24x30 or 24x32 Geobarn, with two bays on the gable end and then one bay at the rear, accessed by a sliding side door and with a 12' ceiling height for a lift.

I have a 30x30 (around 28+ x 28+ inside) and I'm have just enough room to open to the doors all the way. Maybe a foot from the door to the wall on each side...I dunno. Wish I would have went 36x30.

Like Charles said....go big if you can.

I have a 24x24...all I can say is...GO WIDER. As soon as you put anything on the side walls it gets tougher and tougher to park 2 cars side by side and open the doors all the way.

My garage is 24' wide with a single 16x7 garage door and service door on the front. I hate it. I put a 20' workbench along the right side of it, and I can only put one vehicle in there plus all my kids bikes and mowers and stuff. No room for 2 car doors now. I'm tearing it down and moving it closer to the road in 3 years. When I do that, I'll move the service door to the side, use two 10x8 doors, and lose the workbench. Hopefully that'll give me back my 2 vehicle parking.
Anyway, I believe what everyone is saying here is right. You could get away with 24' but make sure you're not planning on storing anything on the side walls. If you could do at least a 28' wide, even if it pinched the wallet a little, you'd love it a lot more later.

My carport (that's just waiting on me to decide to get around to it to become a garage) is about 22x22- don't ask, I didn't build it, it was there when I got here.

Anyway- it's big enough for putting small-to-medium cars in, but that's about it. I'm investigating storage sheds as a place to park the lawnmower, hang the wheelbarrow, etc., because I have done the measuring, and anything that hangs more than about 6" off the walls is going to be in the way.

Go bigger. 24' might be deep enough, but I'd go at least 30 wide, just so you have that "extra" 6' to put your lawnmower, maybe kids' bikes, an ATV, etc. Of course, some of that stuff might live in your attached garage, so...

Like the old Pontiac commercial said, "wider is better."

Had 24 x 24' and many times I wished for wider. Could not open the car doors fully in there with bench. Wider!

I agree with the wider consensus. But it does matter on what size cars you have and how much you can keep yourself from stacking stuff along the walls.
And if you need to be able to open the right side doors once inside.
One thing I have noticed is that if you go with two 8 or 10 foot doors instead of one big door, then you automatically get more room between the cars.

Lets put it this way ................

I have a 28' W X 36' L garage/shop with a 16' W double door and its a "Single" car garage. :wtf:

With all the shop equipment in my garage you "could" get two full size trucks in there if you can crawl out the back windows .

For just a car / truck parking only garage then 24' is OK ,

For a shop / working garage then go bigger.

The wider the better, as others have said. However I only have a 22' wide garage (zoning requirements), and it's fine for my small cars. I don't have anything on the side walls, only stuff on the back walls. I'm rarely needing to open the doors to the stops, so it doesn't bother me. Just my thoughts, obviously others will very.

If you are doing large cars maybe putting the 30' or 32' side as the drive in side and making the garage 24' deep would be a good idea.

What are you doing parking vehicles in the garage anyway ???

Isn't there a man law that forbids the "parking of a vehicle" in any garage ?? ... Last time I looked, garages are for workshops !!!

*hello .. man law police, I would like to report a law being broken*

j/k .... go wider, then take the time to finish it when the budget allows ... you won't regret it !!!

I agree with all of the comments included, the wider the better. Faced with a similar decision I decided to accept that I will only have 1 vehicle in at a time. I am having a 20' wide garage built with a single 12x12 door. Once I accepted that it would only house 1 vehicle at a time, 20 feet seems adequate. 24' for 2 vehicles (if you have anything else in the garage) will likely be frustrating.

Cheers!

Go wider, especially when you consider having stuff lined up and down both sides of the walls.

When I built mine it was originally to be 24x30, I laid it out on the ground and found it way to small. So I went with a 30x40 and wish to this day I had gone 40 x 60. You can not imagine the space tools and all the other things take up.
