If all these 240v boxes should be pre wired with a neutral in the off chance it's needed some day I guess that means that 5-15R outlet locations, which have really been treated as 20A according to some here, should have 3 wire plus ground going to them in case that's ever needed? Which probably also means everything should have upsized wiring and deep square boxes in case it needs to be used for a larger load. Someone must have an electrical distributor or favorite box store that really loves them

On HVAC, we run into circuits where they use the ground as a neutral everyday and I can't stand it. At any time someone will throw a transformer or something that needs low voltage and use the ground.

A neutral won't fix stupid. Transformers are available with not only 120 or 277 primaries, but 208, 240, and 480 so there won't be need for a neutral.

Plumbing for grounds is crazy to keep doing.

Ground rods are secondary.

Ground rods are for shutting lightning.

"We" would be myself, my recently deceased father and our employees. The company was in his name. If you lived in our 3 surrounding counties and had 3 phase equipment, you probably called us.

How many three phase motors did you pull a neutral to?

I knew of no other person who even took the Journeyman electrical exam but me in the area. I would have found him for sure and possibly hired him. I have some formal training and was the only one that I had ever seen with a code book.

Then your obviously qualified to explain to us why box stores shouldn't sell panels. How 'bout enlightening everyone, even those of us that left the journeymans license behind and moved on to a masters.

A dummy running neutral current on an EGC hardly quantifies the need to run neutrals everywhere. why not just fix the issue the pizza pete created?

Use the ground for what? neutral for a 120v primary? so why did someone run 1 ungrounded conductor and 1 ground instead of a neutral? sounds like you have some really bad handyman out your way.

When an A/C compressor is said to have suffered a lightening bolt induced damage, it is never the lightning, it is the grounding system that could not attenuate the surge and the copper line to the furnace brought the current inside.

sounds like your grounding system is not up to snuff. I used to work on grounding systems for microwave towers. we have had towers take direct hits from lightning and not a single piece of equipment was damaged. why? because the grounding system was installed properly and did its job.

so you ran neutrals to 3 phase equipment just because you might need a neutral in the future? smh

are you sure you didnt take this exam out of someone's trunk in an alley somewhere?

I find that really hard to believe. many things you have said here go against proper training in this field and established code. was this code book called 'thumb rules for backwoods electricians' 10th edition by chance?

When I post things, I will always try to give general advice because the people who would listen to such advice are not understanding something somewhere.

They are not useful resources after a while to most people, yet the ones who wrote it ten years ago wrote it as an end all publication.

well your resources definitely arent useful. i think most of us here will agree on that.

For instance: codes change. People's adoptance changes. I research motor oils often and if you read a post that is ten years old, you might be using that is completely opposite of current reality. Think turbocharger coking. When a topic is brought up again, it is not because the new reader or poster doesn't believe or agree with what was said previously.

They likely don't have the time to spend 3 weeks of their life reading personal conversations, arguments, rants, fights, jokes and a whole bunch more. I am disabled. The reason, I don't charge for my time to do anything at all is because I have a huge memory defect where I can't transcribe information.

If I could, I would be zipping through the NEC to very accurately state things with actual references. Originally, I came on her to get info about vehicle lifts and vertical lift garage doors. I found some valuable information, but noticed a very large inactive following with a lot of stale posts. New threads, posts etc... keep them coming so our conversations stay relevant. Have fun out there.
