Just curious about what would happen if you hooked 240v to a florescent with a 277v ballast? Would it overheat, or have a shorter lifespan, or not be as bright?

Not as bright, I suppose could eventually overheat. I have a neighbor who many years ago obtained a bunch of fluorescent 277v lighting from a building being renovated, he installed it in his shop and wired it to 240v and it worked Ok.

if the ballast is really modern, it might be a flex-voltage model. I just recently picked up some T5 flourescents, and they hook up to anything between 120V and 277V. Says so right on the ballast.
