Got some more done yesterday. The snow and cold really slowed things down.

Hard to see in the photos but what is the floor and foundation system? Is this a crew doing the build?
If a crew doing the build, any price difference for labor during peak and off peak season? You get a lot more weather like that than some of us here.

What are you going to use the side porch for?

Looking good and will follow your progress

Its just a standard pole barn, poles cemented into the ground. In the spring we will pour a 4" floor inside the barn and porch as well as a 12x12 pad in front of the door.

The porch is just there to give a place to sit and store some firewood. We are moving our fire pit back there, so it should work out well. I plan on mounting a couple outdoor speakers under it as well as a bug zapper.

thanks Bosty, it is exciting watching it come together.

Well it was -20 on Tuesday, and almost 40 on Friday. It felt down right balmy.

I live in Middlebury. I rode my motorcycle to Fairmount in the summer for the James Dean fest. It was a good time.

The electrician should be coming in the next couple weeks. I decided to give this light a try for the front. They had it up at Lowes and it was super bright.

I can't grasp it either and I live in the same climate. My outside work consist of peeing the dog and making my way from the house to the garage.

ARPS......nice looking building. What are the plans for it? And if you can swing it, at least step up to 60 amps instead of 30. I'm surprised they put a pole building up in winter. But I guess if they want to work in it, more power to them.

Thanks. Its really just for me to tinker around in the summer and have a hangout. In the winter it will just be for storage.

Im not real good with what I need to run what for electricity, but every step up on electricity doubled they estimate. They asked if I welded or what I planed on running out there and told me 30A should be more then enough to keep the beer cold and the music loud.

Pacemaker buildings did the building. They work year round. In fact I first contacted them in November and they were out 6 weeks on their jobs, so I had to wait. They seem to be good at what they do, and are quite reasonable as far as price goes.

Is that a skylight at the peak or they have not installed the ridge cap assembly?

Gonna have some sort of fan to move air out of the top? Summer heat is the opposite of what the past 2 weeks have been

Looking forward for your progress reports and photos.

That is a clear plastic ridgecap. No plans for a fan at this time.

If I have to I will. The door is 8' the trusses are 10'. My attached garage only has a 7' door and my truck fits in there. Obviously I wont be installing a lift. I do plan on buying a lift table for my motorcycle though.

So you guys think its going to be a problem? The company building it has been building pole barns in this area since 1975. I assume they know what they are doing, but if it is a concern I will certainly ask them.
The trusses are 8' and Morton uses 7.5' I believe.

Here is their website if anyone has any interest in them.

The door open past the first truss, and obviously there is a pretty big gap until the next one. I am interested in opinions on mounting an opener. Should I just run a couple 2x4's between them and mount it off of those?

Really nice shed.

Do not skimp on the electricity.
In the next 20 years your needs and usage will probably evolve/change.

I agree with everyone about the electricity rating- here's a thought. If you can't make the budget work right now, at least put a 2" conduit in the trench to pull your 30 amp circuit through to the buildling. Then, when you need to upgrade, you won't have to dig up everything again. Cost of upgrade will be only the wire, breaker & panel.

As far as the door opener, mine is setup just like yours. I had the opener installed and they hung it from the purlins with metal brackets.

I had to go back an look at all the pictures to try and figure out where the driveway is in relation to the garage door. Then I reread the title--it really is in the backyard with no driveway approach.

You are off to a good start.

Not much to update. The winter has pretty much halted things. I picked up a kind of dented up steel cabinet. Fixed it up a bit and made some new shelves out of wood as well as a new vise for my bench.

Looking good!

Btw, the truss spacing looks fine to me, assuming the trusses are designed for that spacing. That's the thing that many aren't aware of when they say "looks like a big space between trusses!".... Today's modern trusses are designed for many things, including wider spaces, so the application in your building looks very much like what I would see on many buildings when I was in the industry.

Edit: We built many buildings with a "skip truss" design to allow additional headroom for car lifts. In these engineered designs, two beefed up trusses would be used in conjunction with beefed up purlins to allow the middle truss in the span to be eliminated. Therefore, the height up to the roof line was available. We would center this 16 foot "high headroom" area at a garage door bay so that the car enthusiast could have his lift, and keep his wife happy by having a shorter overall sidewall and building. Just an example.

As far as pitch, most areas have a "standard" that is the default used in most situations based on typical snow loads and other factors. Here in PA, 4 pitch is that standard, although many prefer more pitch for aesthetic reasons. Yours looks to me like a 4 pitch (just guessing by eye) and doesn't look particularly low pitch or concerning to me. Just my opinion, but I think you're in good shape.
