I started in mid April 2015 and I worked most of the summer and fall on in. I did a lot of research on here along the way. Thanks to the guys I messaged.

I had help from friends family and neighbors both over the phone and in person but I did most of it by myself.

That is almost up to date. I passed my final building inspection and electrical inspection earlier this month and did a little more work on finishing touches. More pictures to follow

Great work! Can you share your info on costs and material sources? Good to know for those of us in the area.

You must be in a pretty remote area in Ottawa to have to use ICFs... Usually its really hard to justify the cost premium to use ICFs in the ICI industry, even with an occupied basement! I guess the additional insulation will help keep the slab warm.

Nice progress, what sleeps in it??

Total cost is at $22581.83 right now. That includes absolutely everything to this point. I still have to get more parts of the heating system.

I went with the ICF for the insulation value and I wanted to try it.

Materials came from Rona, Home Depot, Perth Planing Mill, Rideau Pipe, Ottawa Valley Metal, Satellite Truss Limited, Cavanagh, Bytown Lumber, Westburne, MJS Supplies.

I wanted a garage but I also wanted to build it myself which I am sure you can understand if you are reading this. The only thing I didn't do was put in the garage door. I don't even know who did it. A friend of mine got his usual guy to do it and I was out of town when it went in.

I will put up some pictures of what goes inside once I get it cleaned up.

Don't think I've ever seen ICF before (not that I would claim to have much knowledge of concrete or flooring/support design, but I've seen a lot of build sites over the years and on here as well)...had to look it up. Seems interesting. What's the cost comparison vs a typical concrete foundation?

Nice garage by the way! Made that much better by the fact that you did it yourself. I'm in Toronto/Detroit (from the GTA) and hoping to acquire some property in Prince Edward County soon on which I can build my own shop...will definitely keep this bookmarked!

That stuff is brand named Nudura and I used 2 and a half rows. You can saw the blocks in half and flip them over to make half rows. There are also taper top pieces so you can get a ledge for bricks. I used taper top for the half row on top so I had a wider base for the 2x6 bottom plate. I had to cut the taper into half the blocks since they are only tapered on one side but it is so easy to work with. All you need is a hand saw. The rebar clips into the blocks as you go up and alternates sides. I tied the overlaps and a few spots along the way but you don't have to tie it up all over the place. There is also rebar drilled into the footing and anchor bolts on top for the bottom plate. I ended up getting
18 8' blocks
12 8' tapertop
10 corners
800 ft of rebar
30 anchor bolts with nuts and washers
2057.39

+ 6.5m of concrete to fill it up

I got a quote from a local company to do the job and they said 10000 completed. I could have probably done it a bit cheaper but the way I was looking at it as I am still saving a bunch so why not go ICF. It really is as easy as lego. The hardest part was the lower area for the garage door.

Do the ICFs mean that you are going to heat it through the winter? If so, could you detail your plans?

I have a two car attached downtown, but I haven't yet figured out the best way to keep it warm in the winter.

Yes, I will heat it with the plastic water lines running through the slab. The styrofoam under the slab and all around the foundation will prevent heat loss. Loopcad is a great tool if you are going with a hydronic system. It might be too late for that if you already have a floor. Right now I am just using a 4800w electric heater on cold days but that's only been a few days this month. Taking the time to insulate well and getting the vapor barrier sealed everywhere is worth it.

Most of the parts are similar but there is way more to it than I thought.Once it is up and running I will share some pictures and prices.

wow that looks great! Good job. Are you planning on getting any custom garage storage systems or garage flooring?

Here are some pictures showing the metal on the walls. The heating system will be in the corner once I get all the parts. I am not planning on getting any custom flooring or cabinets. Some of the garages on here are amazing but for me just some stains on the floor from doing work and a top to go across the two cabinets with the orange shelves should do it.
