Been waiting for a HF coupon that worked for the US General boxes. Finally a valid one this weekend, so I dipped out of work for an hour to pick up the bottom 56". Realized I wanted the top in the long run anyway, so bought it as well. 15% off both, and 10% off on top for opening the CC.

Holy **** these things are heavy.

My dad and I got both out of the truck, and got the bottom upright. Will definitely need more hands, or to bring my engine hoist over to get the top on. But, both are just going to stay chilling in their boxes until I get the garage painted.

Top is only 262 pounds, right? I feel like you/dad could mozy it on over onto the top of the bottom box, with the bottom box staged next to your truck.

But this is coming from someone who has gotten 4 guys to lift a double bay matco roll cab up into a pickup box with drawers intact.

Congrats on the score. Those dang coupons are far and few between.

Walls primed. Ceiling painted. Floor pressure washed.

I am so glad the ceiling is done. That took basically all weekend on the staging to do, even with an 18" roller. Not sure if I'll get to any of the wall paint this week/weekend.

Used the engine hoist to get the top of the toolbox onto the bottom. No way we were doing that by hand.

Going to do the Ghostshield 4500 tomorrow night probably.

Picking the lift up next week.

What a great space!

I'm not a builder...but curious as to why the laminated beam was used up against the house when you ended up framing it out anyway....why didn't you frame it at the same time as the other side?

I am also not sure why it was done that way. But, I believe it was framed last because of the windows that needed to come out, and the garage not being dried in at that point.

I'm doing a similar addition to my house, but I took a different approach where the existing wall is getting removed and replaced with the new wall. The use of that beam was a clever way of handling the joining of the two building and their foundations without the need to demo the existing wall. They could not place a proper (to code) foundation adjacent to the existing foundation so the beam allowed them to essentially skip over the house section. The framed in wall below the beam is not structural.

Not sure if this building was engineered or not, but with some clever engineering it could have probably been done without the beam. After you do all that and pay an engineer, the beam seems like a reasonable workaround.

Yea...there is more than 1 way to accomplish the same goal....I can't tell clearly from the pics, but it looks like they dug down pretty deep next to the house and put forms up and poured a deep footer the entire way (same depth on both sides), but didn't come up with the 'knee wall' or whatever its called like they did on the opposite side.

Just curious, as those beams and engineered plans aren't cheap, then framing anyway.

Jealous of the space either way!

The front garage door got installed on Friday. Very displeased with the work on the inside. I'll skip the shame pics for now, but there's about 30 holes in the drywall as a result of whatever they did. The track is also about 2ft from the ceiling, which clearly violates my contract requirements.

The electrical is also complete/on. I just have to wire the lift still - hopefully this week.

The good pics.

Quite happy with the lights. I still have two more - one will go close to the wall near the rear side walk door. I'm not sure where (or if) I will put the remaining one. I couldn't find a spot that measured under 70 FC, and if you're right under a light it's closer to 90 FC. Quite happy with that.

Okay, time for the shame pics of the door install.

Contractor agreed that it is unacceptable, at least. And the rear door was ordered the wrong size, and is now delayed 3-5 weeks. This door guy can pound sand.

55" TV looks very small...

Used the lift for the first time on Saturday. Yep, it rules having a lift. 12 hours of projects on Saturday would have easily taken almost twice as long without it.

What were your contractual requirements? Normally I would say make them come back and fix it but those guys butchered your sheet rock so bad it makes me wonder how much worse they could make it.

The story I have gotten, which doesn't really make sense to me, is that the ceiling is higher than originally planned (13'6" vs 12'6"), and the door track was not adjusted for that. Seems suspicious to me. I am going to let the front door screw up slide because like you said, I don't want this idiot touching it again. I have made it very clear that the rear door will be installed as I expected it to be.

Very similar story to what I got, I had asked our gc multiple times for tracks within about a foot of the house garage ceiling. Garage ceiling came out 18-24” taller than originally designed (we actually increased the size of the garage doors 1’ too in the vertical dimension), and we ended up with this- tracks almost 3’ down from the ceiling. Functional but I don’t care for the look. At first I heard they sized the track for the old height. When I said I’d pay for the increased length they claimed there wasn’t enough structure high up in the wall for the springs. Not sure if that is true and my gc’s fault, or their excuse to get me off their backs. For now I’ve decided to leave it but made a big stink that the tall door in my shop MUST hug the ceiling. The gc added two vertical 6x6s to the structure there to make sure it was good to go.

That is frustrating.

How much did they want for the extra track? I was told "$1300" which I immediately laughed at and said not a chance.

Workbench mostly completed. The top is the cheapest 4x8 sheet good I could find (because there was no way I was paying $60+ dollars for something else), with 1/8" hardboard on top of it. Going to try double sided tape for attaching the hardboard to make it somewhat replaceable. I'll trim the edges with 1x3 pine and round over the corner I think.

I would also like to make some shelving to put a whole bunch of those Husky stackable containers.

Could you share a few close up shots of your concrete floor? Potentially with a flashlight laying on the ground shining across it? Your floor looks very similar to mine and I'm curious if I'm being picky or not with the surface finish. Mine looks fine from 6ft up but a closer look reveals a lot of imperfections. My floor was power troweled and I have some very light scaling in some areas, some areas that just aren't very smooth, and the ocassional pock mark. I'm just not sure if I'm being picky or not and I don't have much to compare it to.

Sure - are these helpful? Overall finish is really smooth and issue free. There are a couple spots near the front door where it got dinged when it was still not quite cured. And a couple of the corners of the relief cuts cracked.

It was nice to go though your build in a few minutes!
I like it mostly because it and the skinny dog look very similar to mine
My garage door guy finished after I gave him the check, asked him about openers,
”You can’t use one with these tracks“

I am

Color is nice too!

Andddd we have a rear door.

sLg9vK2lLVYcCJlz3H2KP9Lw=w1772-h1329-no?authuser=0.jpg

Drywall is (in theory) being fixed today.

Remaining open items on the contractors end:
- drywall fixes
- hose bibb in the backyard (was where the stairs into the basement are now)
- a load of gravel
- install the walk door hardware
- final inspection

The drywall issues got fixed last week, and then I repainted those spots yesterday.

I was also able to move my other Miata over here from my parents house, now that the interior work is all done.

There's a good amount of space between them thankfully.

The ChampCar Miata is in the trailer now for the 12 hour race at Thompson this weekend.

Lots happened this weekend - Champcar 12 Hour at Thompson, got a vise, prevented a house fire.

Picked up a vise on the 25% off HF coupon this weekend:

po8B5WHRKMjVYc1NumTV0--w=w1772-h1329-no?authuser=0.jpg

Both Miatas in.

hYWXdRWQUZrqDnKcZDRgEKsA=w1772-h1329-no?authuser=0.jpg

Then started installing canless LEDs in the ceiling of the bedrooms, because I am so sick of floor lamps. This of course turned into a way bigger project than it should have been...

rMQSN5eBgPscnJJV0rpPMbIQ=w1772-h1329-no?authuser=0.jpg

Because...only you can prevent house fires.

Qo4jJIH8Jt3DJiTVtgGsDZgnQ=w997-h1329-no?authuser=0.jpg

And then ended up rewiring half the house. Got two rooms done, still have one more.

Champcar:

We were running as high as 3rd in class and 7th overall. Had the 3rd fastest lap overall. Then had a caliper fail near the end :( We probably could have rushed to replace it, but wasn't worth it for the 20 minutes we'd have been back out.

Video from my opening stint:

Got the mini-split installed:

W-n4mUrItKZjCuTG9kWLaTug=w1001-h1329-no?authuser=0.jpg

It's a Senville Aura 18K BTU unit. Install was pretty straight forward, though a bit tedious. This one is precharged, but requires you draw a vacuum on the lines. I already had a vacuum pump from carbon fiber projects, so I only needed to buy an adapter and borrow some AC gauges from a friend.

The mega shelf is also functionally complete now:

Also I've started the main winter project this year. Participation has been severely lacking in the class I built my autocross Miata for (SCCA Super Street Modified), and the rules leave some to be desired. So, I'm making it trackable while still being okay at autocross (it will end up being X-Prepared).

Full roll cage, and having a new bottom end built as this one is getting very tired.

Started getting things prepped for the roll cage by gutting the doors. Need to figure out the best way to remove the stupid black goop they put on it to seal them. They'll also get painted eventually.

zXP9t5MVs3pyKGdwqwOslStg=w1766-h1329-no?authuser=0.jpg

I ordered the roll cage kit this morning. Hopefully it'll arrive before Christmas as I'm on vacation for two weeks. Lots more prep to do before then, though.
