We have a 24' x 38' garage (912 sq. ft.) that is attached to our house. It has three solid wood garage doors, one solid wood normal door, and no insulation (except for ~30' that is connected to the house). I plan to insulate the ceiling and walls where possible after installing the mini-split, but even still, the North facing 38' wall holding the garage doors will be virtually uninsulated (it will be all support beams and wood doors). The good news is that only ~12 feet of wall faces south and this wall is shaded.
I have had two contractors quote Mitsubishi mini-splits. One quoted 12 and then 15k BTU (GE15NA2) after I asked for a larger unit. They are adamant that the 15k BTU unit is enough for my garage. The other quoted 24k BTU GE24NA and mentioned that even that might not be enough in the middle of a PA summer without insulation.
Based on what I have seen online, the 12 and 15k BTU are probably too small for an uninsulated garage - especially on very hot or cold days. However, the nice thing is that on mild days, the smaller units can turn down to 3k BTU for dehumidification, whereas the larger unit is stuck at 8k BTU minimum. The 24k BTU seems to be okay overall, but may be oversized after insulation.
I want to be able to work relatively comfortably in the garage all year, and also have good dehumidification year-round to prevent corrosion and improve comfort. I don't mind if the unit is a bit too small initially, so long as once the ceiling is insulated, the garage can maintain 60-80 F even on the worst days (Philadelphia/Baltimore area). What do you guys think?
