So, how tall is the upper level on the pallet rack where the bikes are stored? I saw that the bottom of the lift is 82" off the ground, but I couldn't really tell if the lift was a little higher than the rack or vice versa.

Pretty much level between the lift and pallet racking at ~ 86". If anything the lift might be 1/4-1/2" lower.

Ray: I always loved your racking and the sofa sitting up there when you have friends and relatives sitting up there watching a game on i think your big screen TV, but i never actually saw pics of the TV.

and other pictures where you stored the bikes up on the racks for the winter months was unique to say the least.

thanks for spending the time to fix your pictures cause PB didn't do you or GJ any favors and guessing they are going under soon.

cheers and have a great day!!

Thanks for posting some current pictures. I always enjoy seeing pictures of your shop.

Thanks Mike! If only stuff as interesting as what you've got going on in your shop were happening!

Thanks for the compliments and appreciation.

There have been a series of TVs in the shop. The first one was a defective Sony projection TV that I had hanging around.

That was replaced by a 60" flat screen

Of course as with all garage related aspects, somehow things are never big enough, so the 60" was replaced with a 75"

Should be the last TV change for some time..... I hope!

Nice. Love it.

One of these days I’ll get around to putting a TV in my shop.

Truly a life-affirming garage. Making a mez out of pallet racking and then accessing it with the lift is pure genius...I am in awe.

Love the signage too.

Great selection of skoots as well. A built RS250 was the only bike I couldn't pass @ Deal's Gap on my Derbi GPR50. With a 72cc kit and slicks, it was a mini-roadracing class champ with a clip-on headlight and plate.

I just read the entire thread. I wish I had space for something like that. A great bike space. I think I saw a ZX7-R? And a ~1989 FZR1000? And in the tail-shot of a single-sided swingarm Honda, I can't be sure as to what it is, could it be an RC-30? And did I catch mention of two-stroke streetbikes?

You made good use of the space. The re-posted pics help people like me to admire your work.

My friend in Wellington FL (horse country, polo & show, jumping & etc) and I will take a ride from his house to the "Aero Club," which is a grass runway community for plane-owners. Pretty-cool. The houses have hangers, I think that's a place where you could have plenty of room for a multi-story bike collection. Bill Gates, Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel have houses in the Wellington area for their family's/wives' horse activities.

I have a bunch of bikes, but not the space to easily have them available like you do. We just retired, and have some home consolidation projects, and then I hope to spend my time fixing my collection.

Thanks for the compliment. The RS250 is a great bike. I find it too capable to ride on the street. So light it takes such little lean angle to turn, it always leaves me thinking I'm running a granny pace in turns which would have me leaned over much more on my bigger heavier bikes. I'll bet that Derbi makes an RS250 seem like a truck though..... hmmmmm Derbi ,,,,,

Very nice, flexible space you have. I like the tv too!

ZX7R M2 and OW01. Yes, an RC30. Light on 2 strokes. Ape RS250 and Bimota V Due. Been looking to buy and RG500 for several years.

This is the most recent group pic I've got of my bikes.

There have been a couple of changes and one bike isn't shown, but for the most part it is up to date.

Some pretty over the top stuff in Florida horse country. My oldest daughter competes and is the lead groom for an Olympic rider so we get to wish we were horses frequently...

Thanks for the compliment on my use of space. I find myself feeling oddly fortunate that the zoning laws precluded me from building a bigger building as it forced me to be creative in finding a way to optimize what I could build as opposed to just throwing more money at building a larger building. Of course I wish I could have a larger building, but I know if I built one now it would probably be even more efficient at using space than my current building.

Working on bikes is great. Unfortunately in my book it is second in riding them....

Great shop and layout! Quick questions, I reviewed the thread and could not find what the depth of the pallet racking is? (the red and blue racking)

Thanks!

Sorry for the delayed response. Couldn't remember how deep the racking was and was getting ready for a long trip which I just finished.

The racking the workbench is built into is 36" deep. The racking the bikes sit up on is two rows of 42" deep racking.

Resetting the shop for summer. 4 post lift in elevator mode.

The lift decking is made from a cut up ladder, pinned together with PVC pipe with plywood sheet laid over the frame. Strong enough for purpose, very light and easy to put in place and remove and cheap. Documented here https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6186498&postcount=108

What a great set up. Thanks for the ideas, I love that pallet rack idea! I have a 24 x 48 barn as well but not the height. It came with the house so will do for now but was not a quality build. While I am fixing it up now, it will be a great space to grow my side hustle. Someday I want to move and build a much taller barn.

That GS1000S stands out to me! At least I think that's what I see at the left.
I was searching for forklift ideas to use on my bike loft project and found your thread. Too bad I didn't see it before I started building the loft. I would've mimicked yours.

Nice garage, love the bikes! Quick question: when you’re raising or lowering the bikes on the 4-post lift, do you use any additional straps or support, or do you just leave them on their sidestands? It looks like the latter, judging from your recent pics. If so, I’m wondering if you could run into a stability issue, particularly if you start or stop the lift in transit. Would hate to see a row of bikes end up on their sides, domino style! I know the 916 (with its spring-loaded sidestand) is none too stable, even in the best of conditions...

Thanks for the compliments.

Lift action is smooth and not at all abrupt starting or stopping. The bikes don't noticeably move when the lift is started or stopped.

How did you insulate the ceiling and walls? I live in northern MN. In Lake Vermilion area.

Thanks joe
