24x48 Shop Addition - Suggestions Needed

Hi all,

I currently have a 24'x48' detached garage/shop that I've quickly outgrown (was built 4 years ago). I obviously should have went wider since 24' is much too narrow. The garage site with the 24' facing with a 16' garage door.

Anyway, I'm thinking of adding on to it this summer and would like some suggestions. The cheapest way is probably just to extend it out another 24' to make it 24'x72', which is probably what I'll end up doing, but just wondering if anyone has any other ideas? I'm also definitely going to be adding another garage door out the back and then thinking possibly another smaller door out one of the sides (I have quite a few wheeled vehicles).

I could try widening the addition so that it would be 32x24, but not sure how that would look.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I don't like the idea of taking an already too narrow garage and making it 24' by 72'. It will feel even narrower and look like a bowling alley inside. Post some pictures of the building and site to see what we can come up with.

Here are some pics. I'm in a rural area sitting on 42 acres, so there really aren't any set back, etc. issues. But I am fairly close to the woods on that one side, but could easily widen it 12' or so and still not be too close to the woods. But again, trying to do this as cost effective as possible.

I see what you are getting at but pushing that building out to be 24' x 72' would make it look like a commercial chicken coop. Is the building stick built or metal?

If we're worried about looks, it seems like making a turn left or right and making an L shaped building would be the next option. You can't practically do anything about the width, really.

how about adding a carport structure to each side? you could add one at a time and then eventually enclose them if needed.

Ell off to the left. You will have to reduce the roof pitch if you go deeper than 24 feet, though and have to dal with snow accumulation in the valley

Thanks all. I'm thinking an 'L' shape might be my only option if I don't just want to extend the shop out. I'm just thinking this will add a lot of cost since they'll have to tear off a bunch of siding and the roof to allow for the 'L' addition off to the left or right. I'll have to talk to my contractor to see...

Does anyone have any pics of any detached garages/shops that are 'L' shaped?

That is why you should keep dimensions more like 1.5:1 rather than the 2:1 you did. A 28' x 42' would have worked better for you with the garage doors on the long side, not the short. I also like garage doors on the non-gable sides so adding bays onto the sides is easy down the road. Food for thought for anyone planning a build. buckslayer, who designed this building? Did you spec it or did the builder come up with the design? Seems weird that it is a nice-looking structure with 2 x 6 construction so I know $$ was spent but it seems like someone did not know what they were doing.

Yeah, I should have went bigger to start, but I came from a 26x36 detached garage that sufficed and I was on a budget. So a 24x48 was thought to be enough (it actually would probably still work if I just added another garage door out the back but I want to go a little bigger). But of course, after moving and building the new garage, I accumulated a lot more toys so it filled up really quickly.

Honestly though, if anyone knew what I paid for the 24x48 shop (that is heavily insulated btw), they probably wouldn't believe me. The same contractor is doing the addition, so I'm going to again get a lot of bang for my buck, which is the good thing in whatever I choose to do with the addition.
