So i just picked up this snap on cabinet and top chest for $250 on craigslist and was hoping one of the snap on gurus here could give me an estimate of how old it is. I could not find any decal or other date label on it. It is 40 inches wide ad 20 inches deep. It has friction slides on all of the drawers. I am realy excited to have it but i had to put another $150 to get new casters, locks, and gas springs for the lid. I figure at $400 total it is still a good deal.

It is in good shape. Unfortunatley I have a picture file for bad ebay deals and that is the first one the camera recognized so i went with it. I cannot find any serial number on it. I took out all of the drawers to clean and grease the slides and did not see one any where.

The closest this to a serial number I found was on two drawers there is a snap on inspection sticker. Where it says "inspected by" it has completley faded away but below it the numbers "033" are stamped.

Might be on the bottom, use a mirror and check the bottom of the box. If not I’m sure someone in this forum knows exactly where to look.

...wow... you guys are quick with the accusations.

Instead of giving the guy the benefit of the doubt, you jump right to it.

Some people remove stickers, and mattress tags, just because they want them out of the way.

I got it from a storage unit. Someone put it in a locker and year and half later stopped paying rent so the unit owner took possesion of it, legally, and sold it to me to recover some of the rental fees. I'll stop looking for the date now though.

Looking at the back it is scratched realy badly too, like it was drug across some gravel while laying on its back. It is also possible that took off the sticker.

I wasn't accusatory, just skeptical.

I was actually thinking storage unit too........

Around here they are mostly filled with junk household goods, cribs and boxes of clothes.

You pretty much got the deal of a lifetime there, hard to top that.

Definately not brand new. The casters were shot, the airspring were spent, it was missing the top lock tumbler and there are serious gouges smal dents in the back. I have spent the last week fixing it up and waxing it to get it to where it is now. I know i got a great deal but it was deffinatly not stolen, by me anyways.

It would realy not benefit me to pull anyones "plonkers" - just wanted to get an idea of how old it was since i am not that familiar with snap on model years for their boxes.

does nobody elsethink the OP is pulling our plonkers?

This line, and the line in the next post where the OP refers to it, have me absolutely dying of laughter! That is one of the funniest expressions I've heard in a long time. I am going to start using it.

that new of a box would have had a sticker instead of being stamped. most likely the sticker was removed to keep the box from being traced to it's rightfull owner.

Most likely the case here.

While I wouldn't worry about it, if it was secured via a note, even if he failed to pay rent, there would still be a lien on it. (effectively then, the storage unit would be guilty of selling stolen property, if I have the terms right, (IANAL)).

You got a good deal, now go put it to good use!

feel free, it's a regular UK expression. It's sort of like "pulling our legs" but "plonker" is... well you work it out.
Not to be used in mixed company, in front of your mum etc etc

No, no, no... plonkers is plural. If you mean one bloke he's only got one...

the usual phrase is "Are you pulling my plonker?" when someone tells you something... well, as Snappy says above "Hard to believe you got all that for so little !"

Let me ask- how do you guys find out about storage unit auctions? Do they put up ads, or do you have to call, or what?

In my case I was litteraly on my way to sears to buy a 40 inch set on sale when I decided to check craigslist before leaving and saw the snap on set was just listed 30 minutes ealier, seariosly- no plonker pulling. I knew it would not last so I jumped on it and 2 hours later it was in my garage.

I do have friends who manage a storage unit in Tucson and they have open auctions once a month. Basically they just open the door of the unit and you bid on everything in it with out knowing fully what it has. The catch is you have to take everything. Since 99% of it is, junk it is the easiest way to clean the unit out.

Smoking deal on those boxes. Normally in average to above average condition that same set sells for $1100 to 1400 on local CL here in DFW.
