2500lb winch lifesaver?

I have a degenerative muscle condition and was eying this as a potential life-saver:

Badland 2500lb electric winch $60 (HF)

I spent the last two weekends with an industrial come-along and 4x4 low range--moving things around the homestead, including logs and small skid steers stuck in the mud (just rentals). I would like the quick set-up and line speed of the electric due to my low available energy. Can I run it off 120v if I wanted to use it in the garage some days? Any input appreciated

Youd need an inverter to run it off AC

Well, an AC to DC converter (transformer/rectifier) anyway. Inverter goes the other way.

I don't see a current draw listed, but I'd bet it's somewhere around 60A or more under load. I know my 9k (Superwinch, which is relatively low draw) is well over 400A before stall. Looks like there are some 100A supplies out there in the <200 range.

Might do better just getting a decent battery and an old charger to use it in the garage though.

Thanks, and the warn one would be tempting too. Just wouldn't work around mud and heavy equipment but the other tasks....

Just got to thinking about lugging a battery around. Will have to investigate. Are most of these the style where I would have to tediously unwind with a remote (rather than come-along where I can pull cable out)?

Why did I sell the winch with the truck years ago :dunno:

According to the HF website, you can put the winch in free spool and that allows you to just pull out cable by hand instead of having to run it in reverse to slowly feed out cable under power.

HF claims it has a 1hp DC motor and a quick google search shows that 1hp motors draw around 80 amps @ 12vdc. It would take a very stout power supply to run that off of 120vac. Better off using a spare car battery to power it and then charging up the battery when you're done with it.

My initial thought was that a ~100A capable PS would be huge and an arm and a leg... but I hadn't really looked at any 12V supplies for ages, so I figured I'd check. Found people talking about used server power supplies for <$200, kinda surprised me they'd be so available and inexpensive.

I'm partial to the battery idea for portability, but OTOH my FIL had a Warn 8274 on his trailer powered off a group 65, and it was damn near useless getting weight up the ramps without a vehicle hooked to it. Much bigger winch, though, so I dunno what that little thing would need to run for a bit. But a good battery would cost almost as much as the power supply if you had to buy it.

I will say I dunno how useful that little winch would be to get even a small skidsteer unstuck. General rule of thumb for mired in mud stuff is 1.5x actual weight. Might be better served by an 8-10k on a hitch mount cradle.
