After reading through so many build threads on here I'm motivated to document my garage reno. I recently bought a ranch style house with a 2+ car garage attached.
The garage is a lot newer than the house and there's a mudroom/breezeway between the house and the garage which is fully insulated and finished with tongue and groove walls/ceiling. I basically want to make the garage as nice of a place as this room, so here's how I'm starting!
To start there was a good framework in place without much '****' thrown up already, just bare studs and trusses. One wall (along the breezeway) is insulated and the garage door has the 1" foam insulation on it which keeps the place quite warm even on these cold days.
Step 1:
Fahrenheat 5000w heater - I'm in Canada so I couldn't find one local, ordered from this store on Amazon and got it here in 2 days!!! www.amazon.com/shops/A4ZSBADJP7DJM
Crazy fast shipping, I was extremely impressed. I installed yesterday and it works wonderfully, mounted at the back center and aimed towards my side of the garage to create a good warm flow over there. Not going to leave it on, just want it for when I need to do work in the winter.
Also part of Step 1 i installed a 1500w baseboard heater with thermostat in the breezeway. Keeps the whole area at a perfect temperature.
Step 2:
Insulate the remainder the garage. Picked up the insulation earlier this week now I just need to find time to put it up. With the wiring complete for the heat and plugs around the garage it should go quickly. Just have to move my toolbox and cupboards which is simple enough.
Also, I need better lighting, 4 incandescent just aren't enough. Waiting for someone to have a sale on ballasts to replace it all with fluorescent lights.
Step 3:
Still convincing the wife this is necessary, but I would like to drywall the walls this winter, and epoxy the floor in the spring. I looked into the tiles, but I think Epoxy is better suited for my garage which is an everyday use including winter. Plus I don't want to deal with the install
Step 4:
Right now there are no roof vents or soffit ventilation so before I put a ceiling in I need to put these in. We have to have the soffit/facia replaced on the majority of the house so I'll have the guys put in ventilation while they're at it next summer.
