Making good progress on the deck, we completed a lot of the little things that needed to be done like installing the soffit and fascia, wiring for lights, built in baby gate, and stairs.

Fired up the pot lights for the first time last night.

All the lights are able to be aimed for the seating areas and they are on a theater dimmer to control the intensity and provide a few other features.

That thing is looking awesome! I bet you guys are excited to enjoy some adult beverages out there.

Thanks, yes very much so!

Hoping to score some good deals on outdoor furniture and a BBQ for the deck on some end of season sales.

Nice work. The lights are awesome.

Thanks, we finished the rest of the lighting yesterday so I will post some pictures of that once I get a chance.

That deck looks awesome!

Thanks!

Hi !! My first post :)

Very nice shop you got mine is about the same size. But not as nice inside as yours lol

I got to ask you about your heating. I have the same setup but mine I just have a timer on the pump. If it gets colder I just bump up the time it's on.

What did you do for a thermostat that controls a circulating pump ?

Hello, welcome to Garage Journal!

We have the circulating pump wired to a baseboard heater thermostat, initially I tried a fancy programable one, but we had issues with it and ended up going back to a regular $10 control.

We put the thermostat near the doors so that the system would automatically come on when the doors get opened in winter due to getting hit with a cold blast of air.

Some more progress.

Installed the outdoor rated ceiling fan, moves a lot of air! Need to shorten the down rod a little bit though.

Outdoor kitchen counter made from deck rail spindles.

This particular brand of sink has an optional cutting board that fits into it, I just had to have it. lol

Sink works great, only have a cold water tap right now, but depending on how much we use it we may install an inline or camping style water heater so we can have hot water out here too if we wanted.

Awesome, hope it works well for you.

you putting up gutters on that deck? That look awesome!!!!!

Yeah, I have an eaves trough company booked to come and do them in 2 weeks, we have inlets built into the weeping tile underneath the deck so that the eaves troughs will drain under the deck and into the drainage trench we built.

We've spent the last two days landscaping. Doesn't look like much but we moved approximately 40 yards of dirt that was displaced with my garage build and from creating the drainage system onto my neighbors yard. It's a win win situation for both of us. I don't have to pay to haul this dirt anywhere else, and we were able to build up my neighbors lawn 8 inches higher to prevent his neighbor (who incorrectly raised their lawn higher than both of ours) from flooding him, and consequently flooding me.

View of the finished ceiling at night. We have the pot lights installed, but then we also created a channel around the entire perimeter of the roof that we put LED lights in. They are controlled by a master switch on the wall, but also have a wireless remote that can change the brightness and all sorts of other things.

IMG_4017.jpg

Lit up with the LED's only it creates a nice ambience hard to capture with a cell phone camera, but it would be perfect for relaxing in the evening when you don't want a whole bunch of light.

Getting the site prepared for the concrete driveway guys who will be coming in just over a week.

IMG_4023.jpg

The back part of the driveway will be gravel for now. I didn't want to put concrete back here just yet, I'm not ruling out that we wouldn't possibly do it in the future, but for right now I want to make sure our drainage system is going to function properly before I bury it all under concrete, also concrete isn't cheap as I am sure everyone is aware. :lol_hitti

Laying down some A Base, then we will create some forms to contain the top coat of gravel to a nice uniform shape.

All I can say is WOW!!! just went through all 20 pages of your build and that is amazing... Soo many great ideas for when I start my build... My buddy/builder is coming over in a couple hours and we are going to hash out some ideas and start making some plans... Mine will be an entire backyard and deck plan too... Cheers on yours...

I have been following your build for awhile and must admit it is the most inspiring garage I have seen. I had somewhat the same vision for the angled ceiling lighting ( as that's similar to a paint booth ) and seeing yours helps me plan it. GREAT BUILD !!

Thank you very much. Glad you were able to get some ideas from my build. Good luck with your project.

What a great set of projects. My favorite thread on this whole site, which is really saying something !

Wow, thank you very much. I know the caliber of garage's I've seen on this forum so I am deeply honored to hear that.

Thanks! I am glad I am not the only one who see's the merits of having the angled lighting. When I was designing it that way I had a lot of people thinking I was nuts, including the guys at the local hardware store, lol.

I was away on holidays for the weekend but some progress was made. 3/4" clean limestone was laid down on top of the compacted A base. Our previous driveway was not made correctly, and with gritty 3/4" down gravel with clay in it, what a world of a difference to stand on a properly made clean gravel driveway.

Today we are adding trays all around the house, garage and back fence, lined with weed control matting and filled with the limestone. Helps shed water away from the foundation and makes cutting the grass a whole lot easier.

In prepping for the concrete driveway going in next week, we realized we had to trim the novistone higher so the concrete could be poured beneath it and anchored to the foundation properly.

Gravel trays added around the garage and fence.

IMG_4039.jpg

Gravel tray added along the east side of the house (no more trimming the grass against the siding!), beneath the gravel is some landscaping material angled to shed water away from the foundation.

Window well drains cleared (took us 6 hours to clear them), both of them appear to have been clogged intentionally in the past, perhaps by a disgruntled renter or maybe a kid. 5 ft of solid hard packed mud in each one, and one of them had a cup the same size as the drain pipe at the bottom. After clearing them we leveled the window well bottom and put clean 2" limestone in the drain pipe itself and then lined the window wells with 3/4" limestone.

All right, time to get this thread back to being about a garage.

biUfqyg.jpg

We started tearing apart the wall that separates the house from the attached garage, and not surprisingly it was done appallingly bad.

Its a 2x4 wall and they used R-21 insulation (supposed to use R-12 in this space). In order to get it to fit they had to compress it down to half its size. We calculated that there was only about R-4 insulation value after they did that.

To make matters worse, none of the vapor barrier is sealed, so we are going to have to tape all the seams.

We are going to be adding 2" strapping to all the studs, and adding 6 inches of ROXUL insulation, which you can already see in the picture. Then we are going to use proper fireguard sheeting on this wall. Should make a big difference.

Took down the existing work bench and pegboard, replaced the receptacles and switches with modern and up to code ones. Started putting up the drywall.

IS97qQG.jpg

Drywall going up on the east wall. Continued floor patching and leveling on this side. Two more coats to go then we can start crack filling and shaping the floor near the drain.

Back in the detached garage we've been modifying the gun cabinet to add a drawer system.

The bottom two drawers pull out, while the top one stays fixed.

There is room to expand my collection, but for now the bottom drawers are sized to fit my current firearms.

Really enjoy following your garage build. One of the coolest ones I've seen here. Your vision, craftsmanship and finished results are great and inspirational to guys like me looking to do something cool with our garages. Mine is 25' x 25' so it's interesting to see how you put that all together.

Decided to install the LED yard accent lighting yesterday. We had prepared for this with the garage design so a transformer was already wired up with a coil of wire buried in a box under the gravel tray. The lights have their own solar cell control, but I still have them on a timer switch in the garage so I can have direct control.

New BBQ fits in its spot.

Yesterday we finished putting up the drywall in the attached garage, the biggest difference so far has been with how bright it is in there. We had OSB walls before and I guess I didn't realize how much light they absorb. I used to have three 300w bulbs in there to illuminate the garage, I won't need anywhere near that now.

The ceiling cove that hide the garage doors is pretty nice, I'm going to steal this idea. Just concern about maintainance/service the doors and tracks.

My tray lights are removable, so I can access the doors through them, or if something is really bad, it is possible to climb up into the bulkhead. My contractor had to go up there once already to trim the intake for the exhaust fan as it was contacting the door.
