I used a cold rainy afternoon to finish the insulation in the main shop.

I get to hide all the scraps in here! I’ll Be doubling up on insulation and wall board in the compressor closet. Rock wool for sure.

I’ll be wiring in the 220v and a light plus switch tomorrow or Sunday.

Happy Friday!

I got the 220v tied in, pulled the 120v box to the new inside wall, tapped an outlet for my light switch and mounted a light today.

It’s ugly but that 6awg is a stiff mother and I used all I had. I’m not messing with that stuff anymore. I’ve been tapping into the 50a RV circuit that was already here and been keeping it all rated accordingly in case I need it in the future.

I also found a little 5gallon part washer for free. Pump is shot but I’ll just use it as a basin.

I picked up the RockWool for the compressor closet this morning with the 3yo while we let Mom sleep in.

I found a Cummins Industrial?? 2 speed porta-band for sale for $30 used so I had to check it out. The blade was on wrong (some people are amazing) and it was missing the little table/plate. I got it for $10.

The plasma cutter and drill press came in handy to make this new plate.

I was able to finish insulating today.
Here’s the compressor closet.

4e1956904fb9d82b3b25bc94427748a2.jpg

I also finished the door. Routed in the hinges and trimmed out the door so it closes tight. I found some leftover board in the attic that I ripped down.

0e7acf5179bd9dc43cee0e60f240c178.jpg

cee1e8073a8f73930b5b264a2979ca53.jpg

Also used up some caulk I had lying around.

62dfc6e5e250f974e7e3e81ee27cc264.jpg

Its so much quieter now when the compressor runs and I don’t even have the wall board up yet.

I like the custom woodworking you did for the door handle and lock.

Lol! Those are temporary until I find a proper lock set. I think there are one or two old ones around the house.

New tool day! I don’t normally seek out Harbor freight tools, but how can you go wrong when you have the super coupon for a 20 ton press? $144 out the door.

I can’t even buy the steel for that.

I will probably weld all of the joints at some point.

Nice, I bought mine used on Craigslist here in Phoenix for $100. Came in handy when I did my ball joints and bushings on my truck a few months ago. So far...

I was doing some drilling yesterday and kept having to run across the shop for bits.

A piece of scrap solved that problem.

While welding up these bike racks it became apparent I needed more electrical outlets in the fab area.

af4b90f164555ee61d96adef0d3ac4a9.jpg

I decided to swap the duplex boxes for quads instead of adding additional duplex and running more wire.

Now I have 12 plugs available in that area. Much better!

Payday! I used the money from the first 2 of 10 bike racks to order a sheet of 3/8” steel to top my welding bench!

Also picked up the used bender last night. $100 seemed fair.

So many tabs!

Each rack has 8 tabs. 4 to mount the sign and 4 for anchoring.

Started out with the abrasive chop saw, but decided to use the portaband to reduce cleanup. I’m glad I did, that cheapo saw ran great. Made 54 cuts like a champ.

A friend helped me pick up my steel table top this morning. 3’x6’x3/8”

65a08185598d76829f370d9283bea119.jpg

My plan is to use it as is until I get paid for the rest of this bike rack job, then I will reinforce the feet and add wheels and weld the top to the base, then paint.

Things are moving fast around here all of a sudden. I got two racks done today; went to quote a railing job this afternoon, then came across this bandsaw for $200 locally.

It’s an older a Taiwanese made Craftsman Professional 15” 3spd Metal Cutting Bandsaw with heavy gage steel and cast parts. Everything works, but it does have one rough tire. I’ll pick up a pair.

Just like a project.... always at least one more trip to the store to finish.

Bike racks look good. It’s always good to invest some of the profit back into the business so you can broaden your opportunities.

Sometimes you go to snag a $10 steel office cabinet and come home instead with a 7-piece matching set of garage cabinets for $200!

Between the bandsaw and the shop cabinets I have spent all of my wall board money.

So for now I used up some scrap material and finished the wall board behind; and built a permanent ladder up to my material storage loft.

I’m sure it’s not OSHA approved, but I don’t live in Wisconsin anymore [emoji15]

IMG_0354.jpg

My goal is to have nothing permanent encroaching into my overhead door opening. Eventually everything else in the shop that doesn’t sit against the wall will have a frame with wheels under it.

I want to keep this a modular open space.

Dis you know they were there or they just screamed your name?

I almost didn’t see them!
They were still mounted and full of stuff. They hadn’t been posted yet as they were waiting to clean them out. I just got lucky. A garage door installer was going out of business. The sellers were accepting Venmo.

I needed my dollies back to move other projects around the shop, so I threw the cast-iron casters on my welding bench and secured the top.

The rest of this bike-rack job will go much smoother now!

Also quoted a job tonight for a wood and copper hand railing for an acquaintance’s front steps.

I do think I will need to replace the feet with square tubing in the future, but this will do for now.

Sound board is just a fiber based wall board then you add some resilient channel then drywall. Any building supply company can fill you in.

Thanks! I believe I found it.

A few more small things I have done recently.

Pulled two more circuits. I had 4 spare 15a breakers.

One for future exterior lights and one for an overhead outlet above the welding table.

a6fdf043407d9081664cfa8cdac1b2ad.jpg

Light switch for the half of the overhead outlet that feeds the task lighting.

fb0f95dfd4ebff050f53594d7b363f27.jpg

Other half of the outlet feeds the drop cord.

290abad17986a0b10d9540078987492d.jpg

I have two of these reels now, the other one is centered in the shop.

Lots going on in the shop today. Finished cutting the steel
for the rest of the bike racks.

Replaced the tires and blade as well as dialed in my new (to me) vert. bandsaw.

Started cleaning up the saw today. The guy who sold it to me is sending me a new blade he had laying around.

General cleaning and inspection until
the blade arrives. I plan on rebuilding the clamping mechanism as it is a little rough. Functional but fugly.

I straightened all the sheet metal, repaired a swivel caster, repaired the hinges, rewired the switch, lubed the clamp screw, added plugs to the leg tubes, added a lift handle, and planned the replacement parts to improve the clamping mechanism.

A fresh pair blades showed up for the saw yesterday. I threw one on and roughed in the alignment.

The saw cuts!

I had a small wire wheel lying around so I made a bracket and mounted it to help clean chips from the teeth.

Now to rebuild the clamping mechanism.

I had been waiting on a cheap cylinder from Amazon to get the auto feed on this working. I new the cylinder was trashed when I bought the saw for $250. I tried to get him down to $200 but he had 2 brand new multi-pitch blades and wouldn’t budge further (it was listed at $450🤦****♂️).

Anyway, I scrounged around and found some fittings and a piece of aluminum tubing to turn the little cylinder into a proper auto feed.

I think the aluminum round stock is way better than the single bolt that had been there before.

It works!

(I took a video but don’t know how to upload it here)

That steel top will not be flat. The welds on the bottom will warp it....

Yes, the corners pulled more than I would’ve liked, but I knew the risk. I staggered welds, and checked with a level. It’s really not too bad.

I did not want to spend the money for a heavier table now. This is for general metalworking, not fixturing.
