They work really well until it gets cold, I ended up breaking lids and containers during the winter months. You guys in the warm temperature areas will be better off. They stack nicely as well.

Seems they are matching Menards sale price.

I will warn you on one thing - these style of totes are sold by HD, Lowes, Menards, Sams Club, Fleet Farm, and probably dozens of other big retailers. Even though they look alike, some are SLIGHTLY different. So it's possible if you buy them from two places, they will not stack. Ask me how I know :(

I just bought one exactly like that for almost the same price in a smaller size at HD to use as my part washing "tank", those lids are a pain. But that is a good price.

Originals were I think called Tough boxes, and could hold hundreds of pounds stacked 4 high. I'm not sure all get brittle, or just some. When they are on sale I grab a half a dozen, haven't broken any, but I reject more than half of those I carefully inspect before buying.

No special reason, but I end up buying all mine at Home Depot.

I have a bunch of those and don't like them for storage that needs to be accessible. The lids are a pain in the *** to remove.

I have a bunch of the Home Depot HDX ones. Same issue with lids. Some are great, but some cracked early.

The price is good in the store and online until January 2. Strange thing is that in the store they said $13.98 on the shelf but came up at the register as $8.98. The lids are hard to get off. That's one reason I like them. The lids are never secure on some types I have had and the ones with the latches at the ends always seem to break. Sounds like some people have had a bad experience with them but I think for this price I won't be too dissatisfied. I needed them for storage and won't be going in them often. There are others for sure that are much more durable but at a much higher price if you want that.

Yup, $8.97 at HD.

Look them over, when I buy I sort through the pile until all the bottoms and lids are totally free of defects. Used to be common to see a few cracked in shipping lids on the shelf, but either its fixed, happens more in winter, or they throw them out sooner.

I put all kinds of junk, mostly car parts in mine and since you can't see in them I try to put what is in them with a marker on blue painters tape.

HD also matching Menards 11%, so I would think Menards might even beat them by 11% plus the 11%, if you get a decent manager. All fake "brand names".

I like them because the lids are harder to get off. I have things I need at the track in bins. Oil, brake fluid, gear oil, trans fluid in one. Spare parts in a couple. The lids don't just fly off when going down the road and the lid goes over and around the rail enough that the inside doesn't get wet if it rains.

I was in Target today and walked by stacks of totes on sale, large but not sure of gallon sizes, for $4-5. Sterilize brand.

AFAIK all of the 27 gallon black with yellow lid "tough boxes" are made in the USA, and the only other ones that come close in quality are Rubbermaid. What is nice is that while the "tough box" brands have changed over the years, all of them are close enough to stack but not always exchange lids.

Not for these specifically but I saw a shelf unit at Sears.com made to hold 16 in a 4x4 arrangement, looked pretty handy for easy access.

Costco has a 2.00 IRC running on their version through late January. (1/22, I think?) making them 6.99 or so.

Also all of their shelving has 10-20 off. Been debating picking up another set of the Whalen Industrial Racks.

We were on/off Costco members for years, but Sams has one day passes from time to time and the local Costco's are super crowded. Only way I would join again is if I had a one time purchase worth the membership cost.

OK, this one is going to cost me, grabbed some plumbing stuff at Home Depot this weekend and noticed storage is all on sale, the aforementioned 27 gallon black with yellow top totes, AND now matching 12 and 17 gallon. Had the wife with me, so I need to go back to buy up a bunch of them and slip them into the garage like we always had them.

A lot of the car parts I have make a 27 gallon bin too heavy for me to lift, so I have to leave them on or near the floor, or only half fill. These should fix that as well as allow me to better divide up some types instead of mixing.

Also there is a SET and I don't have all the bits, so no real choice on buying some.

How "waterproof" are these? Good enough to use as storage on a cargo carrier on the back of my wife's van during road trips? Won't be submersing them, but we will drive in rain/snow.

I picked a bunch up from HD... mostly the 17 gal. 27 gal is too big for stuff I store and it'd get to heavy to move.

Overall well made, thick plastic, made in USA and I didn't find any cracked.

I have a couple in the back of the Astro Van that hold heavy items like aluminum racing jack and stands and jump pack and hitches. They slide around since seats are out. No problems with cracking up here in cold Detroit, parked in the street.

The lids are indented for stacking, which means they would pool water, but I don't see any getting inside they seal up like a giant plastic food carton.

Home Depot also has a 55 gallon size for a reg price of $20 and claims it holds 1000 lbs. I'm trying to decide right now if I don't need a couple maybe as semi secure outside storage of some lawn tools etc. Reg price right now, normally stocked so I may just measure one for a start to get a sure idea of what will fit.

Bulk price is only on the 27 gallon, the rest are cheaper one at a time.

I use them on my open car trailer for parts storage. They mainly keep everything dry.

I also cut a piece of 1/4 plywood for the bottoms to distribute the weight for heavy items.
