I would like to do it more for sound deadening than anything
Don’t really want the cost of spray foam
Thinking more like foam board screwed on the bottom of the trusses ?
Or what’s the plastic covered stuff stores like Dollar General etc use ?
Suggestions ?
Thx

What's the truss spacing 24" or 48"?
For that size building and going inexpensive your main options are fiberglass or installing metal panels and blow in cellulose.
I doubt you have a Menards but they do make a 4' wide roll.

Put 2x4’s flat on 24” centers across the bottom of the trusses, then attach visqueen and then a ceiling liner and insulate on top of that.

Sounds like you don't actually have a ceiling. I'd start with adding one (liner panel is my preference), then blow in fiberglass or cellulose.

48” truss span
Look for used Polyiso insulation boards. You can find them on Marketplace. Or there are Companies that remove them from building roofs and resell them at a discount.

Trim them slightly to fit up between your rafters. Use some 1x2 material to block them up from your rafter bottom chord. That airgap supposedly helps increase R value if and when you put a metal ceiling up.

If you need more R value later, you can blow loose insulation on top of the Polyiso.

Same shape as R panel but in a thinner gauge metal, usually 29 gauge compared to 24 or 26 gauge for exterior R panel. Also it’s usually only stocked in white.

Liner panel will probably work against you in sound reduction regardless of what insulation is behind it.

Where are you located?
Average temps?
Shop used year round?
Any current or future plans for HVAC?
How much and what kind of noise are you trying to contain?

What is liner panel ?

It's 29 ga R-panel. Example here:

It really isn't bad at all with insulation behind it in a furnished shop (not a completely empty building). That said, yes, it won't attenuate as well as drywall, but the OP would need to add a fair bit of framing to be able to put up a drywall ceiling with 4' OC trusses.

That brings up another point: what is the BCDL of your trusses, OP?

Sound deadening is usually achieved by adding mass. Dynamat was used in cars for this.
Adding foam board to the bottom of your trusses will lessen the amount of noise that makes it to you but the noise is still there. Your fit up would need to be pretty tight as sound will definitely make it through the cracks. And also to some degree the screws holding the foam board. Spray foam may not be much more after you factor in the price of foam board, fasteners, your time and fuel to go get, your time to install, etc.

Cheaper options :
Hearing protection
Noise cancelling headphones
Turn the radio up when it rains

I have a 32' x 24' pole barn, open rafters and insulated it about 5-6 years ago. Whereas it's definitely an improvement on heat retention, it caused me to add gable vent fans to control the humidity. 1st warm spring day, it was literally raining INSIDE the barn.

Before installing R19 fiberglass insulation, I stapled rafter vents to the underside of the sheathing.

In hind sight, I should have also drilled new vent holes at the peak and installed a new ridge vent and cap. The soffits are vented but there's no ridge vent so there's no balance.

What if I just spray foamed the underside of the roof panels ?
Cost ?
Would it deaden the loud noise when it rains

I'd absolutely recommend adding a ridge vent ASAP. The vent baffles you added aren't doing much of anything without a means to exhaust.

A photo or three would really help us understand what we're working with here. Is the roof sheathed? What is the roofing material? I'd have guessed R-panel, but then again, I thought we were talking about a building with a ceiling at first.

Spray foam isn't cheap, particularly if you spray it thick enough to match the insulation capability afforded by adding a ceiling with blown insulation. There are a lot of conversations here about its potential to rot out the metal/wood, too, as well as the difficulty in replacing damaged panels. Yes, it is an option, but I'd read up on it first.

What is the BCDL of your trusses? Are they rated to support a ceiling?
