They've been that price for well over a year at my local store. They keep restocking so I don't think they are on clearance. Decent bits for wood, they don't do so well in sheet metal.

I have noticed that Lowe's seems to put things on clearance for a bit and then suddenly just makes the lower price the new price after a time. First saw it with a torque wrench I bought a couple of months ago.

I didn't pick up the bits, wasn't interested. But I put them up here in case it was something good. Nice feedback though; maybe a peek behind the curtain to how Lowe's is pricing items.

yes, Norseman makes a good drill bit. I use the cobalt bits as I am usually drilling stainless steel. They hold up well, sharpen nicely and are reasonably priced.

I purchased mine at Epstein's, great to deal with. I did pick up a set the OP noted for plastics and wood. Thanks!

The was the price during Black Friday and I thought about picking a set up, but there weren't many reviews at the time. This set has to be at least as good as the HF set no?

I would say they are as good as HF bits. They are fine for general drilling around the house just don't try any metal. I burned up a few trying to drill a hole in the lid of my Weber Grill to mount a thermometer. I'd buy the HF for $9.99 when the coupon rolls around.

Which HF drill bits (or really any drill bits) are you comparing it to? These are Gold Oxide; whenever you see 'gold oxide' or 'black oxide' on a drill bit what it means is it's HSS coated with that to reduce friction, heat, maybe even make smoother holes because of this. Probably will also have less rust.

Now, HF sells Titanium Nitride Coated & HSS general drill bits. I think the HSS are actually 'supposed' to be black oxide coated, but ymmv with those. Comparing apples to apples, the gold oxide is probably a little nicer than HF black oxide, assuming you get a good set and it is well coated. Comparing this set to HF Titanium coated, nope I would take the HF Ti over these Skil.

HF also sell Cobalt Steel, ideal for cast and generally harder metals. Also useful for high temps, or for when drilling would cause extremely high temps. No comparison there either, totally different applications. I'm sure you can use a cobalt steel bit on wood with no issue, however that isn't their primary application.

Yes there are obviously better drill bits out there in each category. But you can't just ask 'as good as, better, or worse than HF' without knowing what you're comparing to.

I have found the HF Titanium bits are great value for the money, especially when they're on sale and you stack 20% on it. I've used mine for basically everything, neither the bit or the coating has chipped in a few years.

There was no reason to? Posts get buried because they are obsolete. I could just stay commenting on threads from 1996, I'm sure people would get pissed.

If you have nothing new to add to the post, don't bring them back from the dead.
