$299.99 48" Trinity SS Rolling Tool Box & Workbench @ Costco

Costco has put the Trinity 48" Stainless Steel Rolling Workbench with Hardwood Top (Item #922274) on a $100 off sale from the regular price of $399.99.

I picked one up Friday night and unboxed it yesterday. With my Costco Executive membership and a Chase Freedom Visa, I got an additional 7% off the $299.99 (2% Executive member cash back, and 5% Chase Freedom cash back brought the price down to $279 plus tax for me). Unfortunately, the $100 off was rang up as a manufacturer's coupon (no actual coupon was required) so I had to pay sales tax on the full $400.

I am generally happy with it, so far. It is a great looking box, and if I hadn't spent $486 at the dentist this month (my out of pocket cost of a root canal with a crown), I would have picked up a second one for the kitchen. The rear of the box is also stainless steel, so it would look great as a deluxe microwave cart, or even as a kitchen island.

For anyone who might be thinking of getting one, here is what I consider to be the box's weaknesses:

Packaging was below average for such an expensive and dent-able item. No big empty space buffer between the exterior of the cardboard box, and the tool box itself. There were thin cardboard corner inserts, and some cardboard padding, but no dead air and no styrofoam.

Quality Assurance is somewhat lacking. The bolt holes in the end handles did not match up well with the captured nuts on the box, so it was very fidgety to get some of the bolts started.

Also, the picture on the shipping box differs from the assembly drawings in the assembly guide. The photo on the exterior of cardboard box shows the end handles turned downward, and the two lockable casters are on the front side of the tool box. The assembly drawings show the end handles facing upward, and both lockable casters on the right hand side of the tool box.

The drawer detents seem to be present only one the left side of the full width drawers. I have one drawer that, when pulling from the middle of the drawer, almost binds before the detent turns loose and it finally starts to open.

Moving on from QA to design, the bottom drawer is maybe a little too deep for my taste, and all the other drawers are maybe a little too shallow.

The metal of the Trinity box is thinner (.036") than the Harbor Freight 44" box (.052"), but then again, stainless steel should be stronger than mild steel.

Last, is the drawer handles. You can't put your fingers under and behind the handles and then simply pull to open. You have to firmly grasp the handle and pull. Which probably won't be a pleasure to do with greasy fingers.

This might sound like a lot of criticism, but none of it was a deal breaker for me, and the info is meant to be helpful to anyone considering this box.

In conclusion, why I choose this box over the HF 44" box:
Trinity is $279 (with cash back) vs $349 (current HF coupon) (both plus tax).

Costco's forever satisfaction warranty vs HF 90 day warranty.

My local HF lost the keys to the floor display 44" box. They seemed to think I was some kind of a ***** for wanting to actually be able to open, inspect, and close the drawers before dropping $350.

I'm not sure why, but my photos did not post. Here is a second try.

Sandmann,
Sometimes I think that Costco is going to save me right into the poor house. All the stuff I didn't know I needed, like LED shop lights, Vitamix blenders and Sonicare toothbrushes. :)

Nice looking chest. One last criticism, stainless in the grade used will rust in humid conditions (unheated garages), overall your better off with a painted/powder coat box.

How do you know it will rust? Do you know the Chromium content, or personal experience, or maybe just speculation (based on the price)?

It's beyond me how it's possible to make a box like this, ship it half way across the planet and sell it for $300. :headscrat

The drawer layout won't allow you to stand deep sockets upright except the ginormous bottom drawer. The drawer pulls do ****. Not as useful as the HF 44, or Menards 41 etc, but more attractive.

Based on fondling the store demo for awhile

When I purchased my Craftsman stainless boxes about four years ago, many reviewers were stating rust issues on my model (even though mine was clearcoated), and that it couldn't be stainless because it was magnetic. Mine still look brand new, and with no signs of rust. I also have no doubt that it's stainless. I know I'm not exactly comparing apples to apples because of the clearcoat and living in Northern California, but just pointing out that everyone has their own experience and opinion. Maybe wipe it down with some stainless cleaner periodically if you see signs for concern, and enjoy your new box. Very nice by the way!

My neighbor has one he got for Father's Day this past summer. It's showing surface rust 6 months later. I'll try to post a photo when I have a chance and when he and his wife returns from visiting their daughter in chilly Seattle.

Decent box though, drawer slides are smooth.

I had been looking for quite some time at ALL of the similar boxes locally. Purchased this box last week when I stumbled upon the $100 reduction. Yes OP, you are being a little critical...this is not a "commercial" grade box. I thought the same thing when I unpacked it but in reality it was well protected where needed. Listen, anything can and does get damaged. I have received custom crated pieces that got damaged. Mine is perfect. I did not have any issues with the bolt holes lining up on the handles or casters. I can not beat this piece for less that 3 bills compared to the other stuff. I think that I'm might get a second. Trinity makes stainless restaurant stuff that is very well built. As for the "rust" thing...you can wipe it down with WD-40 or just put a coat of your favorite wax on it - issue solved before it starts. Every single piece that I looked at had flaws in design and quality...Craftsman being the worst, IMSO. FWIW. Good post Tony!

I bought the stainless Costco box about a year ago. Starting to show small areas of rust on the drawer faces. It's in my heated garage so it does see a little dampness from vehicles.

That box would dress up a kitchen, and could be rolled out the patio door for duty as a BBQ grille companion. Talk about a trip saver.

Tool Box?? Nice Looking Box.

No kidding! I think about that all of the time. Wine especially. I can get a decent bottle of wine cheaper that what it would cost me just to ship the empty bottle back. Yeah, yeah, I understand economies of scale and all that. We really are living in a "Golden Age." If you have the money and a computer, you can get just about anything you want delivered to your door!

Back to this box. I just set it up and I am really liking it. Tonyciambrone is correct about sockets not working in the drawers, but I got this to store other stuff and I really like that all but the bottom drawers are shallow.

As for any potential rust, I treat all my shop metal surfaces with a somewhat regular dose of boeshield. This cabinet should be just fine in it's new climate controlled home! I have other stainless that will be going in and "The look" of the box will add a little bling to the shop.

I want this box, but only one deep drawer kind of *****.

I'd want to store sockets in the smaller ones, but it can't even store deep sockets up right. Meh
