just got a new home shop and its got a 80gal 2 stage 6.5hp air comp in there . shop is over 1800sq ft and has 1/2 hard air line all over .

EDIT INFO ADDED : the shop has a filter / dryer can unit plumbed in just after the main comp tank . also has huge regulator on it .

the comp is in 1 corner and far away from addition that's a full paint booth .

I picked up a good 60 gal matching brand/make comp that's dead and no motor for a deal . going to add the 2nd tank in line all the way over next to the booth and have it as extra capacity when needed and storage .

anything special I should do for plumbing it in ?

I did plan on a on/off valve in line ( ball valve ) .

thans for any input guys :thumbup:

If I had this setup, I would put a inline air filter / water separator on the input of the 60gal, and add another ball valve on the output along with its own pressure regulator and filter / separator. The main reason for this is that because the tank is at the end of the line, all of the moisture in the compressed air would have condensed into water ( water + metal + storage = rust) not good). Also if the broken compressor has its safety overpressure valve, I would "T" it into one of the tanks openings.

-----------
Edit;

If you don't already, I would add a short length of rubber air hose between your main compressor, and the iron air line. Just to isolate vibrations even more ;P

I forgot info and added it to the original post .

and 2nd tank only still has the dead comp / power / press switch / safety blow off valve.

I am also a reg drain valve guy on tanks . I plumb them up to a ball valve and ****** to rubber hose . then in to 5 gal bucket with hole in lid for hose . then when 1/2 full or so I drain the bucket . this keeps the **** off the shop floor .

My shop (main one) has a 60 or so gallon speedaire ni the hvac/compressor room feeding 3 inch black iron to the building. In the loft about 50 feet away and up one story is an additional 60 gallon tank, plumbed in line. We have no paint booth so no need for perfectly dry air and there is no filters or anything special in line. Compressor has been in daily service since the 60's, second tank at least 20 years.
The tanks do have ball shut offs on them and there is a moisture drop with ball valve about 6 feet from the compressor where the pipe goes vertical for a story. Second tank also has it's own remote drain.
Motor had an issue about 6 weeks ago - while repairing it (not bad for it's age huh?) I drained the main tank and got about 6 gallons out. Just drained it today for the first time since and got about 1 quart out with only a 1/4 ounce out of the vertical valve.
so far, nothing out of the secondary tank.

Im not convinced an overpressure needs to be on both tanks, pressure will equalize throughout the whole system pretty quickly, so unless you put in some major restriction between the 2 tanks (like dropping down to 1/8npt for a connection) physics should cover both tanks with 1 valve.
