check with a saw mill or some one who does resawing..... some lumber yards may also have "rough" sawn wood for wood working....

The typical 2x4 in the store is a 4s4/s4s (surfaced/planed on all 4-sides) You should be able to find "rough sawed", non-planed lumber at some big-box stores. If not, then check some of the lumber yards.

I'm not familiar with a place that sells true dimensional lumber, but if you have the right saw and are able to accept some waste, you can cut down lumber to the right size.

The 2X6 example above doesn't work, but I know the local Menards has untreated 4X6s. it's a lot of wasted wood to get down to the right size, but it may be cheaper than searching around. and time=money, so it could come out cheaper in the long run. I suppose it would also depend on how many board feet you needed.

just throwing it out as a possibility.

Yes, you CAN buy these. I have a timberframe shed that I built, and wanted some rough sawn lumber for framing out the windows and doors. I was able to find actual 2X4's, (and 2X12's for the door header) at a place that specialized in rough sawn timber. They are a bit rougher finished than a conventional 2X4, but were very appropriate for my barn like shed. I built a workbench in my garage out of the stuff as well.

Yup. No problem at all. If you google "sawmill kansas city" you'll come up with a bunch of possible sources. You could also use the old fashioned phone book. If you want a nicer finish and you have the tools to do it have the mill cut them slightly oversize and then rip or plane to your final dimension.

My home is all built with real 2x4's. I have yet to find any around here.

It also has 1x12 redwood shiplap siding. I needed some and was never able to find it either.

Sturgeons Mill in Graton is an old steam powered sawmill, they will custom mill redwood to your needs. I don't have a phone number for them but I believe that if you call Sturgeons Tree Service 707-823-6675 they could put you in touch.

Since you are in KC check with Schutte Lumber:
http://www.schuttelumber.com/

They have been able to supply special sizes for me.

If you have access to a ripping saw another place to check is anyplace with a lot of old pallets.

Many of them will have a true 4x4 runner that can be ripped to size.

Often made of oak.

use ruff sawn lumber or shim the bracket...
originally the brackets were oversized to facilitate the installing or removal off the stakes...
often the stakes were shouldered so the didn't drop into the bracke to far and were cut from demensional 3x5's...

Like others have said you can find a yard that specializes in old cut- or Ruff sawn timer. Or find someone on CL with a portable mill and have him cut it for you. Its going to be expensive no matter what.

ide go to a lumberyard and see if you can get some rough cut they should be able to do it for a small if no fee it all depends on the yard youle just have to pay for the board feet used an if they charge you for the cuting
