2X4 Basics Workbench question

I got my kit and will begin to build it this weekend, but have a couple of questions. I plan on building a 2x7 workbench, with a small shelf that will be 1x4 and have a pegboard behind it. This way it will allow me room to put my tool box to the right of it on the workbench.

Couple of questions for those that have built one:
- did you paint/stain your wood before putting together and if so how did you go about doing it
- do the shelfs you can build mount to the actual workbench? Seems as though they would be wobbily if you didn't
- how did you mount the pegboard if you used to back of shelf pieces?
- what did you use for the top of the workbench?
- any other tips?

Thanks

I've just made my bench out of 6x2 red wood four lengths 10' glued with biscuit joints,(sorry should have put 2x6) 50years of carpentry in the UK,I'm going to stain it when fixed. Asfor shelves above they will be fixed to the wall.
