I like the stealth flush mounting of 2ftx4ft drop ceiling lights, It looks like I could mount them to a drywalled ceiling with attic access. The way they disperse light they should look like skylights which I would prefer over normal high bay lights with a spot pattern.

I cant find any specs for their recommended mounting height. I searched and didn't find many threads on here for garages using this light style. Any real life experience with this type of light at taller ceiling heights? How many lights did you use in your light plan? Or talk me out of this style light.

As you said - They're intended for 2x4 recessed T grid drop ceilings. If you want them flush with drywall, you'll have to get creative - or buy the surface mounting kit which is about 2.5" tall. There are a few without the driver box on the back (driver is in the extrusions) that can be surface mounted - will stick out about 1". At 16ft you'll want to aim for the higher lumen output versions - keeping in mind that the beam spread is intended for lower 8'-10' ceilings - thus you may have more light on your walls and require more fixtures to yield the same fc @ workplane than you would if using a fixture intended for 16'.

You're right - I forgot about the drywall mounting kit. If the fixture is UL rated IC, then insulation can lay on it.

Just checked: The RAB fixture you linked to is IC rated.

No necessarily a problem but do be aware it will take a lot of lights to get decent light on the floor from 16'.
