2x4 recessed troffer with no ground wire

I bought some used 2x4 recessed troffers and they do not have a ground wire. Just 2 blacks and 2 whites. Can I just connect a ground wire to the metal frame of the fixture via a ring connector and screw and connect that to the ground of the 12-2. If not, what is the correct way to ground it?

Should be a green screw somewhere in the ballast area. There is usually a section dinged up with a green screw for you to use for the ground wire.

Usually a ground screw in the frame of the fixture. Or just drill and tap your own screw.

I took the ballast cover off yesterday to see if there was green screw or a obvious hole where one had been and nothing. I assumed since almost every light fixture I have ever installed had the ground wire screwed to the frame, that was the way to go.

Most modern troffers have the ground screw on the access cover on top of the fixture, that way it's not nessasary to open the fixture to wire it, if the cover is MIA then the factory grounding means is too.

There is where your ground screw went. What make of fixture? Some distributors may have parts if it's a common make like Lithonia.

Grounding is one thing but without the covers you don't have anywhere to terminate your cable(s) or close the opening into the ballast/wiring chamber.

Is there a Lithonia distributer near you? I would not offer too much info about them, just that your lights are missing plates, I am a firm believer in having all opening covered to keep critters out. You need the cover plates for 2 reasons,grounding & closing off the openings which are both code issues.
