I'm having one of the cheap metal buildings installed soon.
Enclosed carport type. I'm not sure of the proper name.
My question is my garage door installer is requesting to have the rough opening in 2x6.
The structure will be 2x2 steel tube.
If my opening is 16x8 with 2x2 steel tube.
Do you think I could tie a 2x4 wall but up to it. Allowing the face of the opening to be 2" of steel and 3.5 of wood. Then tieing the 2x6 to both of them covering it up.

Does any one have any experience with these buildings and installing regular garage door with opener.

I'm assuming I will need to build some wood structures to mount rails and garage door openers too

Any thoughts?
Thank you

Yes that's what I'm asking.
Garage door guy said smaller is fine not bigger on the opening. So if I lose 3" on the sides no big deal.

It is usually easier on metal buildings to use reverse angle mounted track and a +2" wide door.

John. The +2". Would the +2" be in the door way or inside the garage?( meaning inside garage would keep inside dimension the same but outside dimension +2") I'm assuming inside the garage. The brackets would have more surface area to mount too.
Maybe the building manufacturer will do this all ready I just want to be sure.

Would this plus 2 also account for the brackets that hold the spring. Or will there need to be some sort of header board installed?

Thank you

You need a 2x6 flat face all the way round the door opening to attach things to, and provide an even seal face. Folks around here counterbore a bunch of holes in the 2 by, and use big self drilling sheetmetal screws to hold it on.

The 2" would be inside the garage, where the door would overlap the jambs. Your finished opening would still be 16x8. This is VERY common in the commercial world.

The springs are mounted in the center above the door. Nothing would really change with them.
