I'm a truck mechanic so i whip out the 3/4 impact gun pretty often. im lucky that everyone in my shop doesnt mind sharing tools but im HUGE on self reliance and hate to borrow tools. that being said, im looking into buying my own full sets of SAE and metric 3/4 impact sockets. my question is which depth would i get the most use out of between standard and deep? and btw im getting grey pneumatic so i dont need to hear about brands.

Deep depth I use the most, I still have not bought shallows yet.
I take it the 3/4 drive stuff isnt shop supplied?

Deep wall lets you get in more places without an extension, so you can apply more impacting force from the gun.

The number of places that you could *barely* fit a 3/4" gun with a shallow socket, and not at all with a deep wall, I imagine are very few, owing to the thread length and overall size of the fasteners being removed with such a tool anyway.

I have 3/4" deep sockets up 1 1/2". Never had a real need for any bigger deepwells. As for shallow, I have up to 2". I'd like to get up 2 1/2" as I'm pretty sure Sunnex offers that big, but that is really a want and not need.

My shop supplies 1" drive sockets but I work at a Mack dealer so alot of dump trucks and cement trucks come through so fasteners like to stay where they've been especially on suspension parts. But the more I think about it I've rarely needed my 3/4 gun in a tight spot. And everything the shop supplies is either beat to hell or magically nobody knows where X socket went.

Another vote for deep if you are mainly using the impact. If you are using a regular ratchet then shallow can be nice, especially when apply lots of force. Yesterday I had an 1 ⅜" bolt to undo on an oil filter adapter, but the deep socket was too tall with the ratchet. I ended up digging out my ¾" drive shallows and adapting it to a ⅜" drive ratchet. As far as size range, I think ¾" drive usually does up to 2" or so, then you would need a 1" drive.

I deal with big diesel and NG engines and heavy equipment almost exclusively, and can think of no instance where a deep well 3/4" drive socket was required, with the exception of the 3/4 x 3/4 deep 12 point socket required for C-15/16/18 headbolts, but that is a specialty socket. I do everything with shallow sockets and have no issues

Yeah I use my 3/4 all the time but never gave iit the thought of if I used deep or shallow. Hence my question.
