3/4" drive SAE socket sizing question

Hi all,

picked up a 3/4" drive mostly complete Williams set a while back and have been trying to complete it because OCD. I have a thread in the garage sale section on that

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=283603

question is this - this is kind of a silly exercise for me because the sizes I will probably actually use in this set are 1-1/4" or smaller, I don't typically work on big stuff. But I just like having complete sets so if I think I have something I don't get surprised in the middle of a job. I have all sizes by 16ths from 7/8" through 1-7/8" plus a 2" socket. Thus I would assume that I am missing the 1-15/16" socket. I only inventoried this set yesterday after a recent purchase so was looking on the 'bay etc. to see about getting that one last socket so I could clean everything up, pack it away, and say to myself "it's there if I need it."

The Williams part number for a 1-15/16" socket consistent with the ones that I have would be H-1262. However when I look on their web site

http://www.snaponindustrialbrands.com/Cat-20-1-194/shallow-sockets-chrome.htm

and at the most complete set that they sell

http://www.snaponindustrialbrands.c.../PDF/Snap-on Industrial Brands - CAT3 347.pdf

the listings go through 1-7/8" by sixteenths but then from there up seem to go by eighths. Does that mean that 1-15/16" is a size that I'm completely unlikely to ever encounter, and a "full set" of sockets wouldn't include that size? I have everything (although not all Williams brand, and I'm missing the T-bar and flex handle) in that complete set save for the >2" sizes, which I never see myself ever needing. I'll pick them up if they come around at the right price but otherwise I'm not real worried about it. Should I just source the missing drive tools and call it a day?

The 29 pc set lists a H-1270 2 3/16" Socket...so the sets don't just go up by eighths always...

Which set do you have, the 29 pc or the 22 pc...

Neither set lists the "Missing" socket you're hunting for...

I have no idea and I've never needed 1.9375" but I don't generally work on "big" stuff. If I wanted one I'd source a Sunex on Amazon and call it a day. That's what I did for 1.6875" for Dodge 4wd unit bearing front ends.

If you've gotta have Williams, well it looks like you already have the part #

1-15/16'' isn't a real common size a lot of sets don't include it. Looks like you can buy a single one from williams but the link shows it is made in taiwan. Not sure if that matters.

I don't have a real "set" - it's an old nondescript grey hand box with a bunch of stuff in it that some guy inherited from his grandfather and sold on Craigslist for dirt cheap. Most of it is old script logo Williams, I have the ratchet, three extensions, the sockets, and a completely f**ked up t-handle (not even sure of mfgr; it has a Craftsman socket welded to it so it's unsalvageable and not worth my time to clean up.) I already gave away some duplicates and have filled in some missing holes off eBay. The biggest socket I have is 2" so I guess you could say that I have the 22 piece set minus the flex handle but that I've filled in all the skips.

I don't work on big stuff either. In fact I think the largest socket I've ever used was on a water heater anode, not anything automotive. (would have liked to have had this set that day though! Really did a number on my old 1/2" drive KD breaker bar) That was the reason for my request.

It doesn't look like H-1262 (USA) or 33262 (Taiwan) are current part numbers according to Williams' online catalog, and I have no idea if they were ever made. I do see that Wright makes one but good lord the price! Have to keep an eye out for a used one I guess. Or I could get a Sunex impact and deal with the aesthetic mismatch :)

You're in a situation where you can sit back and wait for the right one to fall from the sky.
Really, since you don't know when you might need it just hang back and wait, a year, 2 years, eventually a williams 1 15/16 will show up and you can afford to pay a fair price for it because you didn't waste money on a substitute in the mean time.

Many of us are doing this with our partial sets and will keep an eye out for you too. Hang in there, good things come to those who wait.

You coulds also make a signature line for it.

I have an older Williams ¾ drive socket set. I bought it from an individual on Ebay who said he had bought it new many years ago, and only used it a couple of times. Most of the sockets were unused. (it is a script Williams set with the two grooves around the socket). I added to the set with additional matching sockets as I found them on Ebay or in the flea market. I have from ¾ up to 2 inch, except for 1-15/16.

Also, I have bought many ¾ drive sockets at the flea market and made up a set for my work tool box and have left overs and duplicates of many old American brands. I keep a list of what I do and do not have, in my wallet. The one size I have NEVER found at the flea market is 1-15/16.

Probably there is nothing that fits 1~15/16.
What would be the point of Williams, (or anyone else), making one?
