I was given a 25 to 30 year old 14" bandsaw with a bad motor. The saw shows little wear and seems solid.

The motor ran but got hot and smoked a little in less than a minute. I took it apart, blew the sawdust out of it and put it back together, samething. Some of the windings are black but don't seem burned. Any thoughts for why the smoke is coming out?20190824_170831.jpg20190825_125755.jpg20190825_125810.jpg

The black wires should look like the not burned copper wires. Stop messing with it. You may put yourself at risk of electrocution. Look for your local US Motor retailer and buy a new motor.
I had an old GE 1hp short. In less than second there was a spray of molten copper bouncing around the shop. When I took it apart, the inside looked like your motor, inside.

Lemme guess: Asian-made motor? That wiring diagram sure looks like it. I suspect the start winding got fried when the centrifugal switch failed to open.
