3/4 impact set that skips sizes?

Hi all,

I’m looking for a quality 3/4 impact socket set in regular and deep lengths. I’m looking for mm sizes like 19-36 skipping the uncommon sizes. Maybe 19,21,22,24,27,30,32,34,36? I’m looking for Sunex/Gray Pneumatic quality at least. Proto/SK/Wright/Williams level would also be good if there’s a reasonable way to get those as a set or individually (some sites really mark it up a lot).

Any tips would be appreciated. I’m looking into getting a 36-40” breaker bar, so I was thinking I’d have to get some sockets and extensions as well. I’m also considering a Snap On 36” 1/2” bar but am concerned maybe that’s pushing 1/2” too hard. So far for my use I’d be using it on things like crank bolt, axle nuts. I know it’s possible to do with 1/2” (done it). I just want leverage since I’ve got toothpick noodle arms. Fastening values I’ve seen are in the 180-220 ft/lbs max, which is possible with 1/2”, although if it got rusted on maybe not for removal.

Your probably not going to find a set with sizes that small. I would suggest just getting the long 1/2 inch bar and using a cheater as needed. I have a bunch of big boys for mechanics at work and they don't typically break sockets, occasionally ratchets but rarely sockets.

Shop ebay, i have down to 9/16 in 3/4 drive. Or buy a set and fill in the ones that it doesnt include.

Sometimes for disassembly its easier to put a 9/16 or 3/4 socket on the 3/4 gun and snap the head off than screwing with it for an hour. Think of 2 pieces of steel held together with a 1/2” bolt (3/4 hex) its easier to snap the head off and punch out the rest than it is to find a way to loosen it.

If you swap to SAE sizes and buy the ones that dont cross individually, probably meet your needs.

You already mentioned them in your post - Grey Pneumatic and Sunnex. Those 2 brands are probably your best bet for a medium-priced set of pretty good quality sockets.

Ok, thanks. I was hoping there was some cheap option (even Sunex and GP is kind of expensive). Most of the sets from Sunex/GP I’m seeing are not skipping sizes until 36mm, so a bunch of sizes I don’t need. I suppose I could try to find a seller who has individual sockets. Idk if that’ll work since the set prices are usually better than individual prices.

Is 3/4 more of an SAE thing? I’m usually working in metric sizes. Idk maybe I should just get the longer breaker bar.

Yes! There is a cheaper option than GP and Sunex. Tekton makes 3/4 impact sets and some come with a ratchet and extensions. Good stuff for the DIYer or farmer especially.

A lot of people buy 3/4 in SAE because the stuff you usually need 3/4 for still is or was (until fairly recently) very commonly SAE. Also once you get over 3/4 and especially over an inch SAE sizers are almost always more than close enough to the metric sizes to use without an issue. Same goes for larger wrenches also. I own very little metric stuff over the inch mark because it’s usually not needed.

It’s usually easier to find 3/4 SAE sockets, especially in good sets without skips. I tell our new to the industry guys to buy an SAE impact sockets set that goes to 2” and get a separate ratchet and breaker bar.


I do find a good high torque impact and a stout long breaker bar makes 1/2 drive very viable up to about 36mm. Better sets can be had on 1/2 drive up to 1 1/2 and 36mm. Tooling up for 3/4 drive isn’t cheap.
