I'm looking for a preferably vintage 3/4" offset box end Williams spud wrench. I can live without it being offset. I can't find one in any decent usa brand. Anyone seen one, do they exist?

Spuds are usually Open end, not Box. I suppose the could have made box end ones but I don't recall seeing them.

Williams made a box end spud wrench, offset pattern, in the 1940's. See page 48 of the March 1943 Pamphlet A-409. They're in the 1945 A-409 as well. Model No. 8900 series. But they are huge! 8909 (1-3/16") to 8914 (2-3/8"). They made some big *** open end spud wrenches, too, in a Model No. 1900 series - 1903A (5/8") to 1912 (2"), but those didn't include a 3/4" opening either.

I have a fairly decent collection going of the open ends. Probably half a dozen or so. But I only have one of the box ends.

This one is spotted with cadmium plating remains and you can see the "V" on the shank near the head, confirming the wartime pamphlets. It's 22 inches long.

If you're not bothered about it being Williams, those tools are manufactured in the U.K.

King **** make one for sure, but there are others. King **** offer both open end and box end, but you will have to use the British terminology to order one, which is 'ring podger'. Price is about £25 here.

If you do order one, make sure you specify" 3/4" A/F " not just 'Inch size' otherwise you might end up with 3/4 Whitworth and be bitching about the cost till something that Brunel would have used for assembling bridges turns up!

Like Dave says:
3/4" AF 'Ring Podger' from King ****, made in England, established 1856

That might be the ticket right there, I'll look for one of those too.

I have noticed that Williams did make a 3/4 single box end wrench which is another option, the 804a. Another option would be the Williams 8148 "Duohex-Box" 3/4 Single-Offset Box Wrench but actually finding one might be a long shot. I don't really need this to be a spud wrench, but I need one from time to time. I thought that if I could get a 3/4 box end spud, I could dual purpose it for my Bridgeport and just leave it hang on the mill ( all my toolboxen are currently filled past max ). Also spud wrenches tend to be long, which would be a bonus.

Another option would be to get a single open ended or open end spud wrench and just install a hanger/holster for it on the mill.

Ring podger. You Brits! :)

Yeah - a mate was erecting some scaffolding at his house and his girlfriend offered to help.

He asked if she wanted a go with his "eight inch King **** ring podger" and she replied "No, I want to get this scaffolding up"!

True story - I heard it myself!
