Is OSB a suitable underlay vs plywood for flooring? If I intend to use vinyl flooring products will OSB work?

I will say yes to the OSB but you will get a lot of opinions both ways. If you're subbing out the floor covering you should ask them what their preference would be.

If you don't want squeaky floors in the future you need to lay down a reasonable bead of construction adhesive the entire length of the joist.

3/4 T&G OSB is a subfloor but not really an underlayment. You're more likely to see print-through of the OSB texture in your vinyl flooring than with a sanded plywood underlayment. The T&G is likely installed with necessary expansion gaps between panels that will need to be filled.

Way back when I was building houses, we used OSB subfloors and when lino was to be installed they wanted 1/4" popular plywood on top stapled every 8". The osb was good for all other flooring types.

OSB is perfectly fine, and that is what they use around here.

Oops...my mistake, I missed the vinyl part. You want to use underlayment material which is specifically made for vinyl. It has a less coarse texture. Some of it is like a real fine OSB, and the other is a luan plywood. And you want to fill your seams before the vinyl is put down.
