That may be a good rule of thumb in general but there is no way a 1/2" drive ratchet and socket would have fit in the space I could have used a 3/8" bar.

Exactly. It doesn't get used all that often, but when you need it, you need it.

I used a 3/8 socket and a 3/8 breaker bar to turn some side engine mount bolts that I could not get a ratchet onto. Let alone anything 1/2 drive.

I have a Wright Tootsie Roll 3/8 breaker bar. Really slim profile.

Definitely one of the Wrights. They have oversized knurled handles.

Wright makes a smooth handle 3/8" Model 3439

.......and neither meet the length requirement op asked for. Wright makes nice stuff but they don't have near the selection of Proto or SK for certain items.

few choices for standard profile head and around 15" to 17" long
- pittsburgh pro at 10 bucks (17" smooth handle)
- dewalt at about 17 bucks (15" smooth handle)
- armstrong at about 45 bucks (17" smooth handle)

If don't want a cheap one it an ideal item grab used and options on brand are pretty massive for your spec .

Thanks everyone for all the options so far. And some of the suggestions that didn't exactly fill the bill are now being considered.

The DW 15" looks like it might be just right.

So does the Koken but no USA seller seems to have one.

And there is the Matco 15" too.

If the HF does in fact have the larger size yoke / head of a 1/2" bar the it is out for that reason alone.

There were several others mentioned that have that oversized style head where the yoke is on the head instead of the handle (sorry on the terms) so no go on those.

Thanks,

Seth

100% confirmed unless there are different productions of it. I personally had one and returned it because of that. You can even see it on the HF website in that the 3/8 is stepped down.

The ratcheting 3/8 bar is not as pictured on the website. The actual units that I've seen have the yoke on the bar and not on the head as pictured.

I ended up tracking down the Koken. Very nice. Length at 90 degrees is 14 1/2".

Grip is same size as GW 3/8" ratchet so not too slim in the hand. The GW 3/8" breaker bar grip is really thin. I don't have any others to compare to.

The head seems very compact (again nothing to compare directly with). Ruler is a bit off but 13/16" wide, and 1/2" thick. Sorry for the bad focus in one picture.

Thanks for all the input.

Seth

Would you mind telling us where it was that you found it?

I purchased from torquepro through Ebay listing. Though currently they have no Ebay listings. Maybe on vacation? I don't know. There were quite a few Koken items listed when I bought the bar.

I only have 1/2" breaker bars, other than that I use my FL80 for 3/8" breaker situations.

I have the HF 3/8 and 1/2 bars and they have totally different head profiles. The 3/8 is a standard yoke with 3/8 drive like pictured for the Wright. The 1/2 has a 1-1/4 diameter head that swivels with the 1/2" drive on it. The 1/2 profile will not fit places the 3/8 will...not even close.

I stood on it and bounced all of my 200 lbs on the 3/8 to break a nut and the bar flexed a little but nothing else.

I gave a HF 3/8 breaker bar to one of my employees and he's used it many times with no problems. When I bought it, the head seemed the same size as other 3/8 breaker bars I have seen.

My 3/8 is a King Tony I got at Agri-Supply. I think you could put a car on the end of it and it would be fine.

My SnapOn box has the Harbor Freight breaker bar; actually it has both the 3/8" and 1/2". I've rode them quite hard for their intended purpose and even put a 3' cheater bar on my 1/2" drive one. Neither of the tools are showing any signs of deformation on the heads or yokes from the past few years of use. The chrome on them is kind of thin and wears on the hard edges much more than some of my higher quality tools but for $10-15 each I'm ok with a little chrome wear. They break stuck bolts quite well and allowed me to spend more money on tools that benefit from more precise machining and better materials.

I'm not brand loyal and tend to buy what I think will work the best and that's priced fairly. My box has a mix of tools from Harbor Freight thru SnapOn in terms of quality and pricepoints. The vast majority of my tools are mid grade stuff but for stuff like a breaker bar that is such a mind-numbingly simple tool that doesn't require an ultra precise fit (just going into a socket drive end), I see no reason to spend the extra coin on a brand name tool for this use. It's just a metal stick with a common drive end.

Here is a video I found comparing a few brands:
Just looking at his video, all four seem to have about the same temporary deflection under load. All four popped back straight (my HF bars have had repeated use and aren't crooked). All four generated about the same amount of torque.

And very strong too.

...and also providing the user the tactile feel of when they are exceeding the limit. It measured the highest angle of rotation at breakaway. So there's a built-in level of safety....a safety margin.

and also very compact
Ko-ken is on the very left. They are all 3/8 drive sizes:

I have the matco comfort grip 15 inch bar, not impressed, at all. I swear it's made out of spring steel. I usually go grab my flex head sk in disgust and bust it loose. I shouldn't have to do that, a tool truck breaker bar should be tough as nails.

Use an Ebay worldwide search for "Koken Tools" to find them from other sellers.
