Hello, newbe here been lurking for a while and usually get my questions answered with a simple search.
However in my search for a large crowfoot wrench set (1" and up) I bought a set of armstrong which for whatever reason does not make or come with a 1 3/8". So after buying I thought no biggie I will buy an individual piece from SO, Mac or other american brand. In my search I have found that most SO large crowfeet are 3/8 drive. This seems really weak to me particularly for large fasteners.
The last time I pulled the water pump off my semi I thought the breaker bar was gonna snap (cheater bar) on a 1/2 drive mac crowfoot 1 1/4" I would surely have broke a 3/8" drive. As great as SO are why would they make these large tools 3/8" drive?

Thanks Nate.

I have SO 1/2" crowfeet and use the hell out of them on hydraulic work. I picked up SO 3/8 crowfeet from 1 1/16 to 1 3/4" dirt cheep and I use them, but they are totally a tool you would find use for or would never use ever.

3/8 just seems so light duty? Its like a 1.5" 3/8 drive socket just doesn't make good sense. I kinda figured there was a special light duty purpose someone would enlighten me about.

SO 3/8" dr open end crowsfeet are much smaller than a comparable one in 1/2" dr.

for hydraulics work in and around control valves, you probably wont have room for a 1/2" dr, especially some of the mac ones iv'e seen.

over the past 25+ years i've only broken one 3/8" dr crowsfoot,
i've had 24" breaker bars and a pipe on mine.

I am sure the crowsfoot would hold up just fine it was the drive tools I was questioning. i have broke my snappy long handle 3/8 ratchet more than once without a cheater ok I did have my foot on it one time but the other time I broke it with my bare hands. Granted I was doing things that i should've got out the 1/2" for but broke it was none the less.
