3/8" Socket Set ??

OK, I am in the market for a 3/8" socket set - SAE & Metric combo set
Preferably in a plastic case to be carried in the truck for those all important times of need.

I have a old set that has done me well but the ratchet has lost its lever and the case is being held shut with a strap.

Any great deals out there? Or sets you can't live without?
I don't want to get stuck buying a POS either.

Thanks in advance.

Can't mortgage the house to buy it either....no tool truck unobtanium suggestions please.

SK gets my vote. I hope to upgrade all my stuff to SK in the nearish future.

Gearwrench would be my second choice, but depends on how much COO matters to you.

A nice SK set sounds like it fits your bill perfect. SK does a great job in my book of putting kits together with the right stuff and no fluff.

If your old sockets are still good why not splurge on a snap-on ratchet and a new box and keep your old sockets?

Gonna keep it in the truck. I would go down to the old Walmart and get a Stanley set that way if they disappear your not out much.

Kobalt has a 40 piece set that should do what you want. I bought one last year, added a few sockets and extensions and it is set up good enough for me.
It runs about $40 but they had it for $20 last spring around Fathers day.

I bought my S-K set (combined SAE and metric) in 1980. Still have it.
Haven't cracked or stripped out a socket, ratchet still works as new. And new rebuild kits still fit the 45170.

I have a hard time spending decent money on tools that are going to be left in the truck. It's easy for them to get stolen, dropped (and not found) or left behind somewhere. Mostly what's in my tool bag have been pieced together.

We have a set of Crescent tools in each of the Engines at the FD. So far they seem to be decent and have worked out ok for us.

You might want to look at these sets, not big money but they are separates sets. I believe these are opposite sets as the descriptions don't seem to quite accurate.

Within the last year or so kobaltvhas gone to china and its **** compared to the Taiwan stuff

I have nothing negative to say about the tools, but in my experience the case that comes with the set where you get the 120xp ratchet blows (maybe that's why they call it blow molded). When I received mine in the mail I had sockets everywhere except where they were supposed to be.

The SK set above gets my vote.

It and the 1/4" version are the ones in my box. And other then using the 13mm long chrome once or twice (I swear) on an impact, the sets looks new after 2 years of daily use.

I just received the Dewalt 1/4" drive set that Sears had on special for $15.99. I am very impressed with the heft of the ratchet and sockets and the case is nice as well. Not sure about the 3/8" drive set but might be worth checking out.

Been lurking on here for awhile and this is my First post. I just bought the 80550p set mentioned above and I absolutely love the set! The chrome is nice looking, etching on the sockets is easy to read, comes with the 120xp ratchet which is bada**, comes with 2 extensions and a swivel. Awesome set for $80.

Gearwrench gets my vote.

(I also got 80300p 1/4 set and the 80700p 1/2 drive set and love those as well. All 3 sets were from Taiwan and not China) fwiw

Being old, retired, and poor...:sad:

She buys the "mostest and bestest, for the leastest"...

At the moment, GearWrench is the plan...(all mine are Taiwanese)...

Father's Day, I'm asking for a 84 tooth Ratchet set, and breaker bar set, and a few other odds and ends...:evil:

I also think, that some, if not most of their tools, are a lot better than a DIY'er, like me, needs...and the price is definitely right...

My screwdrivers are Proto Yellow Handles Classics, and all my wrenches are Craftsman (USA)...I'm not unhappy with them...

Sockets and ratchets, however...are GearWrench, and I really like them...

(All my sockets are 6 point, but the 1/2" drive Metric set, which I couldn't find in 6 point...)

All of my stuff came from www.tooldiscounter.com , so far, they have the best prices, and the service has been excellent, too...

I just sold a Toptul GCAI3501 35pc set on the site here. I can't remember the original price, but it was a great little set. It had 6-22mm, 1/4"-7/8", 2 magnetic spark plug sockets, swivel joint, 3" and 6" extensions, sliding t-handle, 12" breaker bar and ratchet, obviously. It's a shame that you can't get Toptul in the USA anymore, at least not that easily anyway.

The SK set posted above looks nice too. I have a 40ish year old 1/2" Imperial set that I still occasionally use, and the breaker bar is my go to breaker.

Knew this question would get some interest

I grew up using (and still do sometimes) my fathers 3/8 SK set, always liked the feel.

I do agree that for a set in my truck I don't want to invest too much incase someone wants it mere than me.

Leaning towards the GR for the truck.

SK probably when I get my shop built and kids are out of college (2 currently in full time)

If just to keep on the truck I would go with either Craftsman or Pittsburgh Pro they both have lifetime warranty and priced reasonable..

Well I ended up, compromising & ordered a GearWrench socket handle to replace the broken handle in my existing kit.

Hope the quality is still good.

Also ordered a set of thumb wheels 3/8" & 1/4" as I don't currently have those in any of my sets.

I have the 3/8 gearwrench set off tool topia. (80550). If you look on the website they offer it with a BOGO. There are a few one comes with free wrenches the other comes with 1/4 120xp. Thats the one I got.

I really like them.

Gearwrench is my favorite brand of tools. Those are some nice sets.
