37.5 ft-lbs should be more than enough for any 1/4" drive socket, and keep in mind that is the rating, it is not the breaking point.

Sounds like your using those chinese ones that come in the junk socket sets. I broke a bunch of them until I ended up with craftsman and stanley ones. However, I just use a 1/4" ratchet now that I have a few of them.

I have been breaking Husky ones. They are replacing them with no problem but I just don't like going to the store that often. I know you are also thinking I should get the socket in 3/8 size but I can't find a 3.5 MM socket in 3/8 drive. It is for the twist shift on my bike that was left out in the rain and is totally rusted to the bars.

Yup, time for a good ratchet.

I am surprised the adapters are breaking before the 3.5mm.

Tried any penetrating oil?

You might try the Williams MB-131BA or the Proto 5255

im suprised the fastener head is handling enough torque to break the adapter. i havent used the 3/8 downsizer adapter much, so im unfamiliar with their strength. just odd to me, logically.

Is this bicycle in Michigan? Have you considered looking for a 24" long American-made 1/4" drive breaker bar?
