Been lurking for some time getting ideas...and you guys have PLENTY of great ideas! Thank you very much!!

So, here is the story...and the pics will bear out the truth...

The house is about 11 years old, custom built...really decent place out in horse country in central Michigan (I grew up in Michigan and moved back after retiring from the USAF). I bought the house in Jul '07.

The garage (I see the new thread on the dislike for 'Man Cave' and I sort of concur so I am calling it what it is, a garage. Clever, I know...) has pretty much been a catch all for junk...and my wife's hay overflow storage...what can I say, I love her and she saved a bunch of $$ on the hay but didn't have room in the barn (shed extension I built for her to store hay) to store it when she bought it in the late summer when hay prices were about to skyrocket. But, I digress...

I like to work on my bike (bikes...I just got a 2nd one...yee haw!!) during the winter off-season doing mods and just tinkering. Had one of the propane patio heaters but it never really suited me and took up too much space. So, when I got the wild hair to redo the garage when I stumbled across GJ, I decided to buy a gas heater and make the place habitable even during the coldest parts of winter. But finding GJ (when I googled 'garage paint ideas' was both a great find and a costly one!! I found some of the best ideas and will be using them for most every change I make. In particular, I LOVED XcYZ's Garage renovation and will pretty much emulate that...with some minor differences, but for the most part, I'm shamelessly COPYING...especially the soffit storage...and the counter tops for workbenches, the lighting...and, of course, the floor color...love how that looks!! Haven't made up my mind yet which paint I will go with...I have about 950 sf of floor to paint and will do it myself to help keep costs down...I have to redo my deck in the spring so that limits my budget somewhat.

A few years ago my wife and I painted the floor with the cheap HD beige epoxy. I thought I liked it but it always looks dingy so I am going with a much better full-solids epoxy come spring when it warms up.

In the mean time, I will be patching holes and cleaning up the place and then painting the walls and installing cabinets and soffit storage. I promised my wife I wouldn't start until after Christmas so as to not spend all the Christmas $$ on the garage reno.

First major step will be to get that Reznor installed...that is one area this forum really helped me. I will pay a plumber to install the gas line (tap into black pipe in basement and run it up the wall into the bonus room above garage. I will hang it and cut a vent in (horizontal - can't bring myself to cutting into the roof :shocking:).

Once Christmas is past and the heater is in, I can then start painting the walls, installing lights, and building soffit storage. Then I will clean up some used metal cabinets I bought off craigslist (they are in my enclosed trailer waiting for me to get the place heated). In some of the pics, you can see my PVC framework for my 10x10 paint booth I made and will use to paint all the stuff I need to paint.

I promise to post lots of pictures as this is the decent thing to do since I got so much motivation and ideas from all of your pics.

I know this has been long-winded but since I haven't really started yet I thought I would give you the background as to what the catalyst was for me making the journey.

All I have for now is the ugly 'BEFORE' pictures...so here you go.

And for the record, any and ALL ideas and opinions are welcome. You guys may just have a better idea or save me from a mistake or two. I know I will be asking LOTS of questions...so stay tuned! Show starts in about 3 weeks...here is the preview of what I call the 'ugliness'...

Anyone still reading this?

This pics shows my pride and joy...M109 LE. It also shows how bad the garage is...and yes, I AM ashamed of myself!! :dunno:

As you can see from this photo, all the hay is now moved out into the hay barn. You can just see the front of my new addition to the stable (Kawasaki Concours) which I will use for the longer trips.

Ugly pegboard is down...moving it to the basement workshop.

Prepping small basement workshop to hang newly removed garage pegboard. I don't really care about the unsightly thing being in the basement. ;)

This is the used Reznor natural gas heater I bought off craigslist...in this photo it was still hanging in the owner's house whom I bought it from. This purchase saved me a bunch of $$ and I got to see it working so I knew it was good!

Nice Job!

Many of us probably didn't know that the ME109 is a Suzuki Boulevard model motorcycle.. I ride one of the original Victory's (1999 - V92c) and love the look of your bike..
My allergies would have absolutely had me in the hospital working around all that hay.. Used to not bother me when I was younger, but far less tolerant in my late fifties almost 60.

Congratulations on building your dream shop!

Great work! Looks like you're keeping busy transforming 2 spaces. Love the bikes too. What did you paint in the PVC booth?

Well, being a retired Air Force guy and quite a WW2 history buff, you are quite correct...the ME109 was a stellar German fighter...the M109LE is (and you are correct) Suzuki Boulevard's LE version of the 109, which really just means it has the white stripe down the middle and some other minor cosmetic mods...

Bah! Just giving you a hard time...don't ever take me too seriously...my wife doesn't!! LOL ;)

My first bike was a Victory Kingpin...great looking bikes!

Yeah, hay really does a number on me but so long as it isn't stirred up, I am usually OK. After sweeping it up yesterday, I had to go take a Claritin or I would have been struggling all night. Glad to have it out of there! Thanks for the encouragement!

Thanks! Yeah, the basement won't receive a whole lot of attention from me as it is just a light duty work area. My wife doesn't want me cutting and grinding down there as we store off-season clothing and things down there and with the furnace right there as well, she doesn't want a bunch of dust getting into the vents.

I haven't yet painted anything in the booth...just set it up to see how it would work...now that the hay is gone, I can drape my plastic over it and make it a real enclosure...then I will paint some bike stuff, workbenches, and my speaker enclosures (black) because they are faux oak veneer and won't look right in the garage. Then I will paint my workbench cabinets when I am ready. haven't decided whether to paint them black or red. I have a workbench out there now that is red so I may go that direction...just haven't figured it out yet.

Did a little patching today...won't do much this week so no real updates for a while.

Also, I think I will pull that window framing down and go with some basic plain stuff that I can paint an accent color, like red or black. Can't bring myself to paint that pretty wood...but I can reuse it in the basement! ;)

As is always the case, a good battle plan never remains intact after the first shot is fired. My wife asked me this morning what I was planning to do with the coats we hang out there...so I had to re-think (guess it wasn't a good plan after all! :lol_hitti). So, I think I will enclose the space where my tool box is to the left of the stairs.

LMAO!.... the hay in the garage is classic! Seriously though, you've got a great project going. It should keep you busy for a while.

Making progress .... but please, keep that hay out of there! One pic has the pile of hay right next to standing propane heater that likely has open flame. I'd sure recommend some pallets on ground outside and a tarp! My uncle is farmer and had entire pole shed barn burn to ground from spontaneous combustion from hay being baled too wet.

Love the bikes, friend has Kawasaki Concour and says power is great and preferred touring bike for him. Also like the nice wood trim around windows.

Keep the pics coming, but no more hay!

Yeah, good to have it all moved to where it should be...which is NOT in the garage! The things we do for the women we love!! :headscrat

That propane heater wasn't working while the hay was in there...no way I would have lit that thing with the hay that close!!! :scared:

That *&*^% propane heater is the reason I went with the Reznor... :bounce:

Thanks for the interest...hope to give you some good updates in the next month or two.

Well, it has been quite a while since I have posted...seems like my transformation project has been taking all my time!!

I am not nearly complete (you'd think I was building a garage from scratch!! Some of you guys did just that and did far more than me and were done in half the time...guess I am just slow! ;) )

So, I took a zillion pictures during the reno...here are a few to bring you up to date...

I have some finishing touches and then I have to make a decision on my floor...thinking of going with porcelain tile after being all over the board with choices (first I was going to epoxy, then VCT, now maybe porcelain tile...I don't KNOW!! :dunno: :p )

As promised...

Future Coat Closet (Wife's Request)

New (to me) Reznor heater...painted black to match my future motif

Neighbor with a tractor helping me hang it

Hung (yes...to code...) ...now to get gas to it and vent installed

Vent Installed

How vent install looks from attic side

Had to be one of the coldest days of the winter when I decided to cut a hole through my siding and finish the vent...ugh, my hands were absolutely killing me!!

OK, it is really late so I will post more pics tomorrow...(I am way further down the road than these few new additional photos show...but I have so many to post, I need to do it in steps)

Put my thermostat in by the house entry door

A little trial and error when I put my breaker panel in on the fire wall...couldn't get a read on where the studs were due to the OSB panel under the drywall so of course, when I cut the hole, there were two studs which made them too close together for me to fit the panel...so I had to move it over ...two steps forward, one step back...that has been the theme for this whole reno for me!!

So, I patched it up and you would never know it...except that I just told you! LOL!

Spent a BUNCH of time patching cracked and buckled tape joints on the ceiling which proved to be a COMPLETE waste of time...:dunno: ...did I mention two steps forward, one back? :eyecrazy:

Ready to paint...thought I would be smart and use the airless Wagner sprayer my brother gave me...more time wasted...took forever to get coverage...I hate rolling ceilings so I thought this would be a good way to get around that...proved to be virtually worthless so I ended up rolling the garage in its entirety.

That little setup there with the shop vac and the ladder made my sanding a LOT less dusty by attaching the shop vac hose directly to the sander...that was one idea that worked really well for me! :p

Trying very hard to not be sloppy with the paint. I HATE painting, but that seems to be about 80% of what I did in this reno!! Go figure!! :dunno:

Paint going on...

Installing my lights...when I am done it turns out they are brighter than the sun!! Lovin it!!! The lighting was a major step forward with this project and a motivator for me doing it in the first place. That and the heater...will be so nice working out there on the bikes in the cold winter now that I can be warm AND see!!

I always hated the way these wires looked...

...so I cleaned them up a bit by using a cheap plastic loom from AutoZone.

Now I wish I had a solution for that ugly yellowed door opener light cover.

Materials for the next phase of the reno...fulfilling a request my wife had: Please build a closet out there. (I have never built anything to speak of, let alone 3 walls with strange angles (you'll understand in a moment) nor have I ever framed in a door.

I offset the closet door to the right so it didn't swing out too far into the narrow third car bay...REALLY regretted that after I got the drywall on because I don't like the way it looks...and, with my inexperience of being a carpenter or framer, I didn't think it thru that the trim wouldn't go on right with the angled walls...doh! Oh well, I am living with it...what's done is done.

The other thing I noticed is that NONE of the original build was even close to square!!! I had a helluva time getting the wall to tie to the back wall of the stairwell up to the bonus room...and I made sure my wall was level and square...but was it way off when I tied it to the original wall!

Decided to dress up the door going in to the house by placing trim around it and painting it to match the rest of the garage trim. I also replaced that pretty wood trim at the bottom of the wall with black trim so it didn't stick out like a sore thumb!

More update photos to come...hope I'm not overdoing the detail or boring you guys!

Gotta say, I've seen some messy garages here on GJ, but the hay is a first. Try some toothpaste or a cleaner with mild abrasive on the yellow cover, if thats not feasible I believe Sears sells replacements.

Finally, more time to post additional progress pictures...let me know when I am boring you guys! :p

Starting my soffit storage...

Trial fitting my soffit lights...really nice LEDs I got off eBay for $11 ea.

My new 'not-so-favorite-thing' - drywall and mud-n-taping...I **** at it and it is neither fun nor easy! :eyecrazy:

I took a break from the drywall job and rebuilt some really nice Infinity speakers I have owned since 1988...the foam rings around the woofers were dry rotted so I fixed them and they are good as new...they have been sitting dormant for 10 yrs or so! These will be put to good use in the newly renovated garage! :rocker:

Back to drywalling...

Fast forward a bit...closet is done and came out pretty nice for a non-carpenter hack that I am!

As did the soffit storage...this place may turn out pretty nice after all! :p

As you can see from the photo immediately above, I had to custom build a frame for around the back door as the builder just put it in and left it with the original door frame sticking out of the drywall about 3 inches...so I cleaned it up and put a frame around it...that was a bit of 'engineering'...

Turned out nicely, though...really cleaned it up. Now I need to paint that door...ugh, more painting!!! :willy_nil

Painting is starting to pay off...as the place is slowly coming together (I am ashamed at how long this has really taken me!!! )

Soffit lights are up and wired...they really came out great...I am very happy with them!

I moved that fridge up on the landing so it is now out of the way and we don't have to go down into the garage to get stuff from it (I know, I know...it wasn't that long of a walk!)

Looks much better up there and gives me room for my workbench...besides, it doesn't match the 'interior decorating!

I followed some of your lead and put my compressor upstairs in the unfinished bonus room...so happy I did that. Saves room, cuts down the noise, and just makes it a cleaner and more functional setup.

Wife insisted on a handrail going up the stairs into the house...that was easier said than done! But it turned out OK...

Picture is a Christmas present from my step-son...specifically for the garage. I love it!

Up next: cabinet pictures...but they will have to wait until tomorrow as it is really late...

Thanks for looking!
