Have a 20+ year old 2 ton capacity engine crane and the jack barely works. Don't see any leaks and tried bleeding it without much improvement. Can't tell what the rating for the jack itself is, but what replacement do I buy? This 8 ton for $34 https://www.ebay.com/itm/8-Ton-Hydr...172125616013?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c10 or this 3 ton for $43 https://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Ton-Long...591402&hash=item3ce07c63b5:g:1JkAAOSwLnBXWvT0 Doesn't make sense a smaller capacity jack would cost more. Am I missing something?

I replaced mine with the air-over-hydraulic version from Harbor Freight. I'm really happy with it. You can pump it manually like any other, or you can connect an air hose and just sit there while it pumps itself.

That looks nice but only use it a few times a year so don't need another part to go wrong.

You only need to use it once a year to make it worth while to yourself. I converted mine several years ago and will never regret spending the money. The only change I needed to make was replaced the air line with SS flex and AN fitting when the rubber gave up the ghost. I'm not sure how much the HF ram is but if it's $50 or less you'll be very happy you made the conversion.

The Big Red Jacks hoist I have came with the air over hyd. jack. It's the microwave oven of jacks... you didn't know you needed one till you had one.

It spoiled me so bad I got the 95553 20T bottle jack for my shop press.

I bought a generic 20 ton all welded press at a car show. They used to be pretty common It is far beefier than the HF. The bottle jack that the dealer threw in was a Big Red. That is a line of jacks made by Torin. They are consumer grade stuff but it has been OK except for the one time I took it off to use horizontally. It got all air locked and I had to bleed it.

Air seems to me like it lacks the sort of control I want inching the engine out of a car.

You use the air for the long distances, to take the slack out. Then, if you are uncomfortable with the air, use the regular pump. But the air trigger can be feathered for slow, controllable inching.
