I was just wondering what 3 phase compressors brought in areas around the country. Here they are a tough sell. Only businesses and industry have three phase power so if you buy one you have to either change out the three phase motor with a single phase, or run a phase converter. Neither of these are cheap, with the motor being cheaper than a phase converter.

I seen last week where there was an 80 gallon IR compressor that was fairly new that was being sold for 350...that's cheap!

I started this post because I just saw a fairly new Quincy with a five horse, three phase motor and he is asking 1200....probably going to be a tough sale....

That's about how much I offered (and was accepted) when I bought my 80 gallon Speedaire (3phase).

It seems like when I check out CL the 3 phase compressors are nearly always listed for prices similar to single phase. Either they are just taking a stab hoping to find someone who really needs a 3 phase or don't realize that their nice 3 phase motors are only worth scrap price - literally.

The only way I would buy a single phase compressor is if it was 120V. I refuse to buy any larger single phase machines, they are worthless to me. Same deal with single voltage 240v 3 phase stuff.
Normally only smaller consumer machines are worth more $$ in single phase rather than 3 phase.

It's the same here in Canada. I think a lot of the bigger companies with 3 phase power also want a new, properly working machine with a maintenance contract so they just buy all their equipment new and have the technicians come in to service it regularly. Smaller operations set up with 3 phase who may shop for used equip likely already have their compressor. In short what I'm trying to say is there is a smaller market for these machines on the used market.

If you think running 3 phase machines is expensive, then youve never done much of it. Not to criticize anyone, but its much cheaper than you could imagine (~$100 tops).

Are you saying $100 tops to run them on single phase? as in swap motors or use a converter?
