3 phase connector

I want to run 2 3 phase machines off of 1 VFD using a 4 prong receptacle and plugs. Looked in Graingers and they want 250. for a receptacle. Any cheaper way of doing this? At that price I could buy another VFD.

what sort of current? I have a bunch of 30 amp 3 phase twistlocks, might have some 20s. Also have 12/4 and 10/4 SJO / SO cord.

well check and see if its 20 amp or 30, and ill look through what ive got. What all do you need? One receptacle and 2 plugs? Or?

You don't need any kind of special plugs/sockets for 3 phase...any old 4 conductor connector you find at Home Depot will work. (rated for the right amps)

thats bad advice. if its three phase power, then you use a three phase connector.

Teco VFD 220V 7.5 AMP IN 7.5 AMP OUT 2 hp. 12-4 SO cable. Thinking could I hook both machines to a terminal strip?. Run only 1 machine at a time?

I wouldnt wire both machines together. You could interlock a pair of contactors to make an A/B switch, but that would cost quite a bit more than the plugs. You need the 20 amp connectors. I'll scrounge up a pair of plugs and receptacle for you, ill PM you later.

Thanks mrb. 1 more thing I need to check. My VFD IS 2HP. The BP is 1-1/2 hp. The saw might be 3HP. The current model is. If my saw is , maybe this VFD is too small?

The saw motor is a 3HP Baldor. Something else worth mentioning. At one point down the road I want to pick up a lathe. Good chance it will be 3 phase too.

Generally a VFD will not survive putting a drum switch between it and the motor, such as your Bridgeport has. You will need to hook the motor directly up to the VFD and rewire the drum switch to the control wiring on the VFD.

The parameters in the VFD are set to match the motor. This makes using 1 VFD for multiple machines difficult, when changing the parameters and control wiring is needed as well as the plug for the motor.

I think you would be best off to have 1 VFD for each tool, if VFD’s are the route you choose. Otherwise you might consider a rotary phase convertor and keep the controls on the tools as they are.

I will mention that not all VFD’s will accept 1 phase in instead of 3 phase and deliver full output. Best as I remember the FM-100 series will up to 3 HP, but not above that.

Maybe its time to think about a RPC.Say a 7.5 hp.About $580. That would cover the future lathe along with what I have now.

Checking around it looks like the FM100 is obsolete. They went to the FM50

RPC might be the way to go. Come out of that to a small 3ph subpanel, and then off to your machines.

It looks like you can save $ buy building your own. There are instructional kits available on how to build one., that I would need. Just need a 3 ph. motor
