I have been looking at 3 phase air compressors, but I don't have 3 phase electric. When using a converter how much energy does it use? What I mean is, is it the same amount of electricity as 240 single phase or is there a savings by going to 3 phase? Hope this makes sense, lol Thanks

Typically any time you have transformation there will be losses and inefficiencies - how much all depends on the converter you end up buying for your three phase transformation. The manufacturer should list this You'll save money not having to buy the converter and pay for the inefficiencies of it if you stick with a 240v compressor.

No. The only benifits to 3ph motors is longer service life due to design
Apart from cost, availability, etc

The drive will cost you more then the savings of a 3ph motor.

You will not save money on your electric bill

It is generally acknowledged that compressors are not good candidates for rotary converters because of the high load they present to the electrical service.

If you only need the compressor to run when you are in the building and using it, it won't matter because it will only need to run occasionally. Kick on the converter, fill the compressor, turn it off until you need it again. If you need to run it 8 hours a day, every day, then you might care about the efficiency.

Horsepower is horsepower is power is WATTS ! Watts is what your POCO is selling you. Add any kind of "converter"in the middle and there will be additional losses.

Yank the 3 phase motor and put on a comparable single phase, 240V motor. You will be happier in the long run.

Thanks for the replies. I am just asking because I will need to get a new compressor in a couple years. Thought if it would save some money I might do it. Looks like I will stick to single phase. When I use it I run it a lot, but then it may sit for a month or two.

Buy a 5 HP single phase compressor, just avoid the ratings for the gullible, read the motor data plate & if it says "SPL" avoid it.
