Last year I bought hydraulic used shear off CL. It's a 3 phase unit and it came with a cheap import phase converter. It looked like a VFD but I think it was actually a cheap static converter. I saw it under power when I bought it and just brought it home, ran power to it, and used it for almost a year............before it died.

When it died and I started troubleshooting I realized the the output of the import box (I'm still not sure what it was) fed a contactor and a control transformer to run the hydraulic power unit for the shear. The coil for the contactor and the transformer were toast.

I decided that I could replace everything with a VFD. I bought a micro sized VFD from automation direct for a 3 HP motor and installed it in the enclosure where the contactors and transformer used to live. I cut some openings in the enclosure for ventilation and wired the foot switch for the shear to the VFD.

It took me two calls to automation direct tech line. One for a wiring issue and another for a programming issue, both calls were less than 2 minutes and resolved my issues. My shear is up and running again and I'm a happy camper. I can't say enough about the great customer service I got from automation direct. I don't want to sound like a commercial but in these days when you call for tech help and the person speaks english and actually knows the product, I have to give them KUDOS.
